The Paramount Theatre, an outstanding example of Art Deco architecture, has housed 'moving pictures', the Oakland Symphony Orchestra, the Oakland Ballet, rock and other music concerts since it was completed in 1931. Riding the brief surge of "movie palace" glory in the 1930's, the Theatre has known both neglect and renovation. Under the ownership of the City of Oakland, the Paramount earned National Landmark status in 1977 and serves all the arts in its present incarnation. Called "the best haunted house" in the world by some theatre lovers, behind the ornate decoration, elegant proscenium arch and well-equipped main stage is a maze of tunnels, trapdoors, catwalks and secret rooms....less
