Vassar Clements, a self-taught musician whose skills were impressive enough to attract the attention of Bill Monroe, first appeared alongside the bluegrass giant on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry in 1949, recording his first session with Monroe the following year.     I first heard Vassar on a Richard Betts (dickey) solo album and was dazzled.My dad's family played country music so i fought that and listened to country rock and discovered Vassar.Saw him in concert with John McEuen and he was amazing!!!!He signed anything we asked him to,very nice man.

    Iwas occaisionally on the stage crew with the New Riders in the 70s when I was about 19. Met Vassa backstage in Lexington Ky one night and he went out of his way to talk to me as I was the youngest crew member. The nicest man I ever met as a performer. Doug Renner
