Concert Summary

Todd Rundgren was at the height of his solo career in 1973 with Wizard A True Star and the ambitious Todd double LP when he decided to form Utopia, a musically adventurous band in which he was simply a member.

In the beginning, Utopia was a progressive rock outlet, with 6- to 15-minute instrumentally driven tracks created for late night FM playlists. By the time the band released its fourth album, Oops, Wrong Planet, with songs like "Love Is The Answer," it had essentially become a pop band, brandishing the same style of Top 40 hits that Rundgren had made famous…entire summary

This was one hell of a tight band. I miss them. Todd still rules of coarse but they need to do another album/tour!

  • The Claw | Tuesday, June 02, 2009 | 8:14 pm

"Hammer In My Heart"...as good as it gets.

  • Creep-O | Tuesday, April 21, 2009 | 8:18 pm

I want more Utopia! I really hope these guys reunite, for their music is timeless!

You have everything right except this show was to promote an album simply titled "utopia". Not to be confused with the 1974 release this album had a white cover with the band in suits. Great pop record and great show.

"Hammer In My Heart" is one of my favorite songs ever, his scream in it rules. God bless Todd. Or Todd bless himself, whatever...

Like Babysandy, I was at this show as well at the country club. I recall it distinctly as I was pretty drunk and had to pee for most of the show, but held out 'cause it was just so great!! One of my favorite Todd shows w/Utopia. They were dressed up in grey Beatle suits. Having this concert show up here is a treat, as the Network CD with most of the new songs from this show appears to be out of print. This show was also broadcast live on the USA Network, which is the reason for the long breaks between songs (i.e. commercials).

I must say that I am a big Todd fan all the way back to the Nazz, which by the way is one of the most underated bands. I must have gone to 2 dozen concerts and was good friends with kasim for awhile in the lmid 80's. Utopia is classic and so is Todd. S/A is maybe one of the most beautiful albums ever recorded. What was best was seeing Utopia in an outdoor venue, they rocked. Gload WV got this one online.
