Concert Summary

It's hard to imagine that over a quarter century has passed since the time this show, featuring an up-and-coming new wave band called U2, was recorded for the King Biscuit Flower Hour in the intimate Orpheum Theater in Boston.

It was shows like this that helped establish U2 as one of the most consistent and powerful live acts, and when the band exploded into one of the biggest bands of all time, there were a number of us who could say: "We saw them in a small venue before they were famous." Those days are long gone, but recordings like this are the next best thing.

I was at this concert and, to this day, everytime I hear a U2 song, I smile with the memory. WBCN played "I will follow" and U2's version of "Gloria" a lot afterwards. Lots of little round black pins with a yellow "U2" stated popping up on jean jackets everywhere. Seemed like Bostonians knew about U2 long before my college friends elsewhere in the US. Thanks for posting the concert here!

Saw them as part of my 31st Birthday gift with a friend and future wife and was in awe by both David Johansen and U2. We were in the center of the first row in the balcony section and couldn't have had better seats. I'll never forget the balcony moving and rocking when they played Gloria. Thanks to Wolfgang, the bands, the Orpheum Theater and concert goers and WBCN. My wife and I are still married and we keep in touch with our friend who got the tickets for the three of us!

I saw this show.Johansen blew the roof off of the Orpheum and to be honest I felt like there was no way U2 was going to be able to follow but they did and they took all of us through the hole in the roof that David Jo made. One of the most incredible concerts I've ever attended. Thanks wolfgang.

rabargs & nolasince90!! So nice to hear from someone else who can relate to seeing them this far back. I couldn't get into the Paradise because I was too young, but I did manage to see them at this show at the Orpheum. I am amazed at your memory, rabargs - I remember seeing David Johansen whom we all loved and poor Robert Ellis Orall who was boo'd. Beyond that I remember little besides for "Gloria" and Bono's famous knee to elbow pose. I know that I still have a bootleg T-shirt with their 4 pictures & "October Tour" on the front, somewhere down cellar. I didn't see them again until '87 (either at the Centrum or The Garden??) and then the other night at the Somerville Theatre thanks to WBOS. I'm going to listen to the concert now after 25 years? I have to also confess that besides for the GMA Fordham University TV performance and 2 nights ago, I haven't listened to their new album - but I plan to tonight. Thank God for Carter Allen on 'BCN for turning all of us on to U2 and other great artists.

Saw them first at The Paradise in 1980 and then at this show. They have been from the beginning unbelievable in concert - a true religious experience for those of us "believers". The Vertigo tour was amazing and I can't wait for the No Line on the Horizon tour (U2 360)to start. Rabargs, you and your wife should go hear them live again - a completely different experience than listening to the CD, and they still play a lot of the "old" stuff. They still got it after all these years!

My wife and I, and 4 friends, were at this concert. We were, at the time, 21 year old Punk Rockers. The opening acts were Robert Ellis Orall and David Johansen. We had gone there to see David Johansen, we really had no idea who the other two bands were. Orall was a surprise, a country-rockabilly type band. They had a hit at the time with a song called "Crawling from the wreckage". I'm sure it's floating around cyberspace somewhere. Then came David Johansen. He was SO cool. He did all of his hits. We were going to leave after he was done. One of our friends begged us to stay to hear U2. So we did. Their song "Gloria" was getting a lot of play on WBCN at the time. After the introduction, Bono stepped out onto the stage. A little, skinny irish guy in a red leather jacket and pants, with short black boots on his feet. They went right into "Gloria". The whole crowd got up and started dancing at their seats and in the aisles. Amazing. I could hardly understand the lyrics, but the MUSIC was incredible. Hearing it played live was very different than the radio version. It was heavy, driving guitar work. You couldn't sit still listening to it. It wasn't quite my thing at the time, but I could hear why people liked it. It was an awesome show. Since then, U2 has just gone straight down hill. Nothing I have heard from them since has equaled the power of what I heard that night. I'm damn close to 50 years old now, but I'll never forget that show. Oh, and my wife and I are still together.

i never have seen these guys live. i used to see their name on a venue in wash.,dc. it was just a small bar, i had never heard of u2 at the time and always thought that was a pretty good name for a band. i thought about going to see them based on the name. i never did. big mistake in retrospect. oh well, you win some and you lose some. it's nice to hear these recordings. peace, jim
