Concert Summary

While U2 has released many official live albums, none of them capture the group at this stage in their career. This show was recorded less than a year after the release of their full-length debut, 1980's Boy, and before the release of their 1981 effort, October.

The highlight of the show is the explosive passion and energy shown by the group's four members, all of whom are in their very early 20s. While there may be technically more impressive live releases from the Dubliners, few recordings capture the vitality and exuberance that they had as youngsters trying to forge…entire summary

OK, it's been about 18 years since my U2 phase ended, but during that time, I collected many bootlegs of this band. So, the concert footage from 1981 isn't exactly new to me--but this is first time I have ever heard such a great crystal clear recording. That is truly a revelation to me--to hear the additional nuance in Bono's voice, to hear the crispness of Larry's drumming, to hear the reverb more clearly--gosh, it's like I'm there. I'm just ecstatic.

Well thats all very flowery and whimsical Jimi H but varied opinions are what have sparked some of the greatest debates in human history so if you dont like something that somebody posts, then I suggest you stop yourself from reading the whole thing. By the way, while you're at it, get a sack and stop being such a kiss ass. Peace.

Yeah they were kinda alright when they first hit the scene but can we all be honest here and admit that they are probably the most overrated band in the history of rock music?

I saw U2 in early 1981 playing at a bar named Uncle Sam's in Buffalo, New York. A friend of mine said, you have to come listen to these guys, they are great. He was right...their energy at that concert was amazing and I have never stopped loving their music.

I enjoyed the concert. Reminded me of Gang of Four. IIRC California Hall was on Polk Street. I'm guessing a 4,000 seat capacity. I believe Romeo Void opened for them (another choice on this site) Poseur Bono defaced that fountain in Embarcadero Center for the sake his "Rattle and Hum" movie. Dont forget the "defiant" rooftop concert with the cops all bent out of shape for "Streets Have no Name" video in heavy MTV rotation. Band neded a couple permits, but the video producer prefered the "take back the streets" image. I once crashed a fraternity party where Yesturdday & TooGay (Y&T) were playing. A clever & cruel comparison. Gives me hairballs!

Saw the band at a UK Christian Music and Arts festival back in 1981. They were en route to Newcastle(?) from London, if I remember correctly and they 'dropped in' and did s 4 piece set. Brilliant: sadly; I'm not so sure that they have it any longer.

    T. Musing Love the passionate energy of the band. This '81 performance in my home town was a harbinger of the great things to come.
