Concert Summary

After several years of establishing themselves as one of the most high energy Bay Area bands, with a horn section second to none, Tower of Power were poised for the big breakthrough. The group had recruited keyboardist extraordinaire Chester Thompson, and were now fronted by lead vocalist Lenny Williams as they began recording exciting new material for their third album. As blue eyed blues borrowed from black funk, proves a white man does have a soul!

What in the world is the holdup for this band to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?? Tell me tell me do you think you know? James Brown, Sly may have originated funk, but this band mastered it., and after all of these years T.O.P does not miss a beat

Without question or any reasonable doubt, Tower of Power rocked the house, world and universe!!!! This band, in any carnate, was and is, STILL the funkiest badass group to ever hit a stage or sound studio!!! I am so grateful to Wolfgang's Vault; eternally grateful, through the spirit of Bill Graham, this site exists for us who truly enjoy the essence of what REAL, LIVE, RAW, NASTY, GRITTY, DOWN & DIRTY FUNKY music that was ONCE, in fact, "WAS"......that we remember when this music was the norm; not produced (behind the scenes) by executive suits; who had and have no 'funk' in their very souls!! They don't 'get it' and never will 'get it'; so to have this outlet to reach out to, is a wonderful gift. I thank you Wolfgang; whoever the "F" you are??

Great set. I don't think the summary is correct about Check It Out eventually being known as Squib Cakes. The two don't sound anything alike.

Saw the fellas at BB King's last week in NYC and tight and powerful as ever. They blistered the paint on the walls of that place. After 40 years, there they are on stage...laughing, breaking it down, dancing, and carrying on that powerful staccato sound and blowing it out with that churning rhythm section. There has to be a lesson of life there somewhere. One TOP show and I am good for another 6 months.

I just saw TOP last night in Annapolis, Md at the Rams Head. They are still the tightest band out there, after 40 years they're just completely in sync. I don't know why they are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! They belong there, Period! With four original members and world class musicians added along the way, they are without doubt the most deserving of major recognition like the HOF. Can't someone out there make it happen? Can't someone see they are the absolute best horn band ever?

this is a great show. funny but i never really took the time to get into tower of power until very recently and i cant beleive how dyna,ic they were, particularly during the lenny williams era. his voice is so dramatic and it fits the band to a tee, and vice versa. i dont know what went down between those guys but it's a shame lenny wasnt able to stick with them longer than he did. as great as the tower is they really dont get the recognition and respect as some as their counterparts (erath wind and fire, the pfunk movement, ohip players etc)
