Concert Summary

This is a segment of the opening act performance that Tommy Bolin and his band played on his final tour that features a keyboard solo from Mark Stein and drum solo from Johnnie Bolin before gliding into "Post Toastee," Bolin's set closer, a song that is reminiscent of Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love."

Bolin was on a fast track to becoming the next big guitar hero in the world of rock 'n' roll when this show was recorded in 1976, but at the same he was driving on a highway to hell with a growing heroin addiction. In a matter of weeks after recording this concert, Bolin would be found…entire summary

I HAD THE TICKETS IN MY POCKET THE NEXT MORNING AFTER HE DIED WHEN I FOUND OUT. HE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE AT THE ELECTRIC BALLROOM IN ATLANTA THAT NIGHT.

Back in 1978, I used to go watch a band called, "Espresso" down at The Jamestown Club on Bayshore Drive in Coconut Grove, Florida. Johnnie Bolin was their drummer.(George Gomez-lead guitar/vocals,Roberto Pinon-bass/background vocals,John...-keyboards/rhythm guitar/background vocals) Bill Szymczyk(Eagles,etc.-producer)was their manager. Wherever they played in the Miami area, they drew big crowds. They were incredibly tight and my favorite stuff from them were their covers of Steely Dan. George Gomez sounded exactly like Donald Fagen and they played the songs note for bloody note! The Jamestown is long gone of course. I had a buddy that I sometimes worked for who owned a mobile recording studio.(QL Mobile) I remember one session for Espresso at The Univ. of Miami's Jazz School in Coral Gables.(we used their equip.) We recorded the band on the stage at Gusman Hall.(we placed baffles, etc. around them for acoustic purposes) The control room(studio) was all the way up top at the rear of the theater.(looking at the stage through a window) It was a pain in the ass to run down to the stage to adjust a microphone or whatever and then run back up a shi*load of stairs to the control room.(as few takes as possible guys!) BTW you can hear Roberto Pinon(bass/background vocals) on The Vault. He plays on Warren Zevon's Tower Theater Show(4/22/80)-check it out...

i was at this show and of course it rocked!!! i was thrilled he came to town. scandal was the opener i think. i do remember the last thing tommy said and it was: "i'm tommy bolin. who the fuck are you?" then he cranked everything up as loud as it would go and blew the doors off the place!!!

I was lucky enough to see Tommy Bolin live at Winterland. The first half of his performance was questionable. The audience was pretty quiet. I couldn't even tell what he was playing. Then somehow magic happened. He said a few things to the crowd and started playing selections from Private Eyes and the place erupted into a concert that was worth remembering. Radio stations the next day commented on how Tommy Bolin was either too drunk or too high at the concert. Listening to this rendition of Post Toastie took me back to that night in Winterland and wondering what if he didn't die so young back then. What would we have today besides a hole to fill. I would like to hear a full concert of his performance even the Winterland one. Tommy Bolin was and is a great guitarist..great...just great.

This rendition of Poast Toasties is much more rocking thant the studio version which is also very good. WV should try to piece together the entire concert. Sadly, we lost another great guitarist with a lot of potential to heroin. Wonder why it was in vogue during the early to mid '70's amoung guitarists.
