Winterland was such an amazing venue - so many great shows. I loved the acoustics there. Saw TP as part of another show that was similar - maybe a year earlier? They had a great tight sound in those days - before all those boring songs about LA.

Pretty funny...saw my post and I pasted in Springsteen and the Dead by mistake. Now wouldn't have that been an interesting show? Maybe more interesting than the Who/Dead concerts?

Greg Kihn was the opener...the only other one on the bill. This was the night before Winterland closed. The last month at Winterland was pretty amazing. I went to The Springsteen and the Tubes shows. Knowing what I know now I would have gone to more...here are the last days of Winterland... 12/2/78 Winterland Van Morrison Tower Of Power Moon Martin 12/15/78 Winterland Bruce Springsteen 12/16/78 Winterland Bruce Springsteen Grateful Dead 12/28/78 Winterland Tubes Ramones SVT 12/30/78 Winterland Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Greg Kihn 12/31/78 Winterland Grateful Dead Blues Brothers New Riders Of The Purple Sage

I saw him at Winterland right around this time. Not sure I was at this show, anyone remember who else was on the bill?

I was at this show, it was awesome. Tom leaned out over the crowd and lost his balance and fell into the crowd. After the concert we went and ate a huge breakfast, got some more herb and got in line for the Dead New Years Eve/very last show at Winterland. It was awesome but I crashed for like 4 days after, I was still high.

Tom is in his best "strangled-chicken" voice at this show. What the hell, sounds like the gig was recorded through the board with no ambient microphones. Gives it a slightly disconnected sound. I am sure there was more energy at the show than is portrayed via this recording. Good version of I Need to Know with Tom emoting like banshee and hopping like a bunny.

I have the original SF Examiner/Chronicle"pink section" advertisement for the December 30 show. It included a special heading "Final Days Of Winterland" and the show was just Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers and The Greg Kihn Band...$7.50 Advance, $8.50 Day of the Show.

I think I saw this show, was second on the bill if remember. I think The Jam headlined. Can't remember who opened. All for less than 10 bucks. Wow.

One of the best acts live that I´ve seen in my live! It´s a real treat to see original drummer and bass, what a rythm section!

Well, I have to correct myself...it has been many years...Tom fell during the song "Shout" Thanks Wolfgang Vault for sharing and letting me relive a great Saturday night in my life! And Thank You Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers for a great show on the 2nd to last night of concerts at the Winterland Ice Arena!

I was lucky to be at this show...My last visit to my beloved Winterland. During this concert, while singing " BreakDown" Tom fell off the stage and into the crowd...it seems like it took a long time for him to come up,. When he finally got back on stage, his clothes were all torn and even though i could see that he was shaken by his fall,he went right back into singing "Breakdown" A great show and memory for me forever!
