After a warm introduction from Bill Graham, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers took to the Winterland stage the night before the revered venue would be closed forever with a capstone set by the Grateful Dead on New Year's Eve. Petty was a perfect installment to drive home the final days of Winterland and was very well-received by an audience of young San Franciscans, keeping his vibe upbeat but also tapping into some of the…entire summary

Tom did fall into the crowd at this show... intentionally, during "Breakdown" (if my memory serves). I had seen TP in the audience at Winterland a couple of weeks earlier when Bruce Springsteen played (two shows... both epic)and Bruce had done a thing where he wandered over to the edge of the stage, turned around, and fell softly on to the outstretched hands of the crowd, who then passed him around in front of the stage for a few moments before Bruce pointed back at the stage and he was passed back to the stage. Well, Petty tried something similar, except when he dropped into the crowd, he didn't really get caught, but was pulled down into the crowd to the floor and had his shirt practically torn off before he was "rescued" and went back onstage. I was there and saw it, and the magazine I worked for at the time, BAM, ran a photo of Tom with his torn shirt... It happened.

This was the greatest show ever! My recollection is that everything after Breakdown was an encore. I think they stopped coming out for encores only after they had played every song they knew. They even gave away a free 45 rpm record (remember those) of whatever their next hit was.

How lucky you were, those that attended.

I think Winterland closed not long after this.

No,Tom didnt fall into the crowd. I was up front and first time ever seeing or hearing about him. "Tom Petty who?". Breakdown made me a fan for life.. Wow, all the comments take me back, esp. the last one. I wouldve gone but my friend was seeing the Dead at Winterland the next night.
