Concert Summary

In 1978, Tom Petty and his brilliant band, the Heartbreakers, had become critics' darlings, and after two albums the band's music was fully indoctrinated into FM playlists. This show was recorded at Boston's intimate Paradise Club for broadcast on the King Biscuit Flower Hour. The band had elevated itself to small theaters by this point, but the Paradise was a Class A showcase room and better set up for a live recording.

Touring in support their second album You're Gonna Get It!, the band charges through great…entire summary

This version of I Fought the Law seems modeled more on the Clash’s version than the Bobby Fuller Four original.

I was at this show, had tix for the first show but it was oversold and they let us line up first for the second one. The Paradise was one of the best rooms around at the time and I was able to see many of the greatest bands around at that time. U2, Police, amd Blondie to name a few.

TP&H's rock with the energy and looseness of a barband in this intimate venue. I fully enjoy hearing early shows of any band as you get a much better sense of who they are TP illustrates that wonderfully here with a wide range of covers and the ability to stretch out a little on a few of the selections. The few times I have seen Petty, he pretty much runs through all of his obligatory hits - which are many - and no longer takes the musical risks that he takes in this gig. They are still a phenominal band, don't get me wrong, but this show highlights their background, personality and overall ability much better than the more modern & standard issue version of the band.

My wife and I, along with our three daughters, recently fulfilled a longtime dream and got to see him play at an outdoor concert at the Gorge in Washington state last month. He was GREAT and has not changed in 30 years despite the 104 degree temperature.
