Concert Summary

Little in this life is certain, but three things are guaranteed - death, taxes and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

Like Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen before him, Tom Petty is of that rare breed that manages to always make kick ass rock 'n' roll on their own terms while still selling millions of records. Though…entire summary

See my previous post. More than happy to announce that this is definitely the gig I attended on that memorable night in 1980. The concert has always been in the top five best gigs I've ever seen so thanks again for making this gem available.

Is this definitely the Thursday night gig? Hope so as I was there and it has remained one of the best gigs I have seen. The band were on fire and the NME reviewed the concert, beginning the review with the immortal words "I thought rock and roll was dead until Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers took the stage at Hammersmith Odeon on Thursday night". The band played two consecutive nights on the Thursday and Friday and the version of "Stories We Could Tell" that appeared on the live album, "Pack Up The Plantation" and also as a bonus 45 with the single "Refugee" was, I believe, taken from the Friday concert. Anyway, this is a fine recording of a great band in their prime, whatever night it was!

Petty and the Heartbreakers are always better live, the records are often to slick and produced. Best live band around though.

Wow. Incredibly backhanded complimentary review on this one. Great concert, though. Maybe I'm just hopelessly sentimental, but I like hearing classic bands play their classic repertoire.

I FOUND IT!!! I can't believe this show is online......and in full I recorded this off the radio about 20 years ago and played the tape til it died The sound quality you've got here is far superior to my radio recording of years ago. Just fantastic! Many MANY thanks Now if only I could get Pack Up the Plantation of DVD my life would be complete

Tom appears to be in a loopily good mood this evening. The show flows quite well and some songs that have a tendency to fall flat 'Even the Losers' have some real snappy bite. Of course the rapping on 'Breakdown' and the elongated boogie of "Shout" are real hilites. 'Century City' could be quite anthemic.
