Concert Summary

At age 21 in 1968, singer-songwriter Tim Buckley was beginning a musical metamorphosis. The young folksinger with an astonishing voice was becoming an altogether more experimental musician, one who would blur the lines between folk and jazz and reveal a vocal, melodic, and poetic talent that continues to mesmerize listeners to the present day. At the time, blending jazz elements and spontaneous improvisation into folk music was no easy task and endeared him to relatively few. Buckley would simultaneously alienate folk and jazz purists, as well as his own management and record company, but…entire summary

I was lucky indeed to see Tim Buckley perform at the upscale Jubilee Auditorium in Edmonton, Canada in 1970. I was in the front row center and could see the passion in his eyes as he sang. Imagine my surprise when I saw him just a few years later at the Fieldhouse, wailing and flailing his way through Greeting From LA! What a magic night that was. This wasn't a sit down venue and everybody was dancing and partying. Tim's music still touches a raw nerve for me. Sadly he died in the flower of youth, but he lives on through his music.
I saw his son, Jeff perform in Vancouver in a small club and the physical resemblance and the passion he brought to his music was almost deja vu.
Thank you for posting this Newport Folk Festival performance!

I saw Tim Buckley at The Troubour in Los Angeles many many times. Unreal. He was the master of the 12 string. His voice like an angel.

    Wow!

Never had the pleasure of hearing Tim Buckley perform in person. What a tragedy his career, his life, was so short. One could make a convincing argument that his was the most talented, expressive, and certainly most unique voices. EVER. I can think of no other singer who changed the shape of his vocal sound as he sang like this. And conga drum and vibes? What a gorgeous yet unassuming sound; again unique. I love "The Dolphins" Thanks yet again Wolfgang for a treasure.

His version of Fred Neil's classic "The Dolphins" was the first I had ever heard. It is still the "definitive" version as far as I'm concerned. (>]:o)~
