Concert Summary

One of the most original voices and idiosyncratic piano stylists in all of jazz, Thelonious Monk was also one of the genre's most prolific composers. His staggering output includes tunes that have become classics - "'Round Midnight," "Blue Monk," "Straight No Chaser," "Epistrophy," "Pannonica" and "Bemsha Swing," to name just a few - and have been covered by innumerable artists over the past 50 years.

For Monk's July 3rd set at the 1959 Newport Jazz Festival, the enigmatic pianist-composer was accompanied by his longtime tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse and the rarely recorded rhythm…entire summary

There's an excellent Monk tribute album called "That's the Way I Feel Now." I have it as a double LP set. It was available on CD, but the CD is now out of print. It has people like Dr. John, NRBQ, John Zorn and the Carla Bley Band. Well worth hunting down.

This has some real cool grooves. For you Monk fans pick up 'Live at the IT Club'. It really swings. I put this show up there with that recording and that is one of my favorite live records.

I had the pleasure of sitting in the second row orchestra seat, dead center for the Town Hall concert earlier that year. The concert was fantastic and as I remeber it, the song Rootie Tootie was replayed as there was a problem with the recording equipment. The audience was asked to stay and the group played the song again and that's the version on the Riverside album. When the album came out, I pasted the ticket stubs to the album.

While DJ'ing at WPBX-FM in Southampton, NY I donated my jazz collection to the stations library and like a jerk I included that album. Boy, do I wish I had that now. What a classic that would be, the original album of the concert with the ticket stubs taped to the album.

Marvelous collection of some really swinging tunes. Monk was a musical genius, and I'm glad to see that some of his best work has been preserved for jazz lovers all over the world to be able to access through the internet. Yours has been a true gem of a website for me to discover and log onto nightly for great listening pleasure. Thank you.

Very nice. There is a review on Amazon of the import 1 cd release of this show that states the sound quality is mediocre. I can tell you that after buying the flac dl here & burning to disc, the sound quality (& the show) of WGV's version are excellent & I am picky. This is official release quality.

Ah! Monk forever. One of the few great musicians/composers that deserve the word "genious"; and if that's Chinese music then I'm crazy about it! This time with Sam Jones and Art Taylor, nothing can go wrong.
Once more thanks Wolfgang's Vault for this treasure.
