Concert Summary

This recording captures much of the third night of a weeklong engagement of The Who performing their rock opera Tommy at the Fillmore East, with Bay Area band AUM opening, followed by fellow Brits King Crimson.

Following the band intro, they kick the show off with John Entwistle's "Heaven and Hell," their standard opener at the time. "I Can't Explain" and "Fortune Teller" hark back to older times, as does "Young Man Blues," but all three are…entire summary

Live At Leeds blew me away, But this is on a par with the 1970 I.O.W performance,If not better. Maximum R&B indeed

In answer to bizzwriter's question, Townshend is cursing at Who soundman Bobby Pridden, standing stage left, because his guitar amp blew out during 'Heaven And Hell', which it had a habit of doing at the start of the set because of the overload . Pete makes reference to the sitaution later in the set.

I just noticed that right after Heaven and Hell ends Pete starts screaming at someone about something. Can anyone make out what he's pissed off about?

I LOVE THE WHO! Saw them over 20 times and most of it pre and early Tommy. It is great to hear anain concerts I attended. It truely is a MIND BLOWER again! Early WHO played 2 hr cancerts unlike any other bans (except the Dead) Why is this concert so heavyly edited? The Filmore East was so great of a place, Thank you Bill Graham and the WHO BobB

creep0-you are correct-The Who could blow the Stones off the stage easily!! and just about any other band!!

Great sound and one of the best versions I have heard of Tommy live. Entwistle's bass playing absolutely powerful and nice variation of Can't Explain (although Daltrey's voice a little low in the mix).

The Who were a better live band over the Stones by miles. The Stones had raw energy, but the Who had both the raw energy and power on the stage.

What an amazing performance, I just wish there was more of it. Entwistle's bass has a different feel to other live shows I've herd from around this time.

The Who's cover of Shakin' All Over is pure trash bliss. Great other tunes woven into it too. Love the nods (and odds and sods) to Howlin' Wolf/Willie Dixon. Maximum Rock n' Roll no doubt! Time to dust off my Live at Leeds vinyl. . .
