Concert Summary

Evolving from Pete Townshend's idea for a musical autobiography of The Who, the second of the group's two full-scale rock operas, Quadrophenia eventually developed into a social, musical and psychological exploration of the mid-1960s mod scene in England. Written from the perspective of a British teenager, Jimmy, the band member's role in the storyline became symbolic via Jimmy's four personalities. I was at the opening show of this tour, the one where Moonie OD'd on animal tranquilizers...besides running a tape with the sound effects, they had also erected 2 towers at the rear of the Cow Palace, with these umungous horn loudspeakers on them. This was back when quadrophonic "sound" was the latest thing.... When Townsend yelled, "The story is set on a rock!!!" the sound effects kicked in with the seagulls & rolling surf, we were standing less than 50 feet from stage center, smack damn in the middle, they "moved" the fade knob, from front to rear, the wall of sound, quite literally hit you like a wave.... back & forth, several times...amazing to say the least.... oh-yeah, the opening act....some unknown band named Lynyrd Skynyrd.....I've seen the Who some 10 times, nothing compares to that show...period.
