Concert Summary

A wild mix of progressive rock theater, multimedia, and scathing social criticism of America's television culture, the Tubes were unquestionably one of the most outrageous groups to surface in the Bay Area. As their name suggests, the Tubes based their performances on the surreal, alternate reality of television in which anything could happen and nothing was off limits. Most of the band's members had spent time in art school and this had a profound effect on their approach to music, which contained extravagant theatrics, including video screens, naked women, motorcycles, dancers, and even…entire summary

My friend Mike Morgan and I were right up front at theis show. We were there to see Mahavishnu perform Apocaslyspe with Sean-Luc Ponty and an eleven piece band with Carlos Santana sitting in for a Love Supreme encore! Also noteworthy was Journey's debut that night. What a performance! Hopefully those two performances will see the light of day here in the Vault, as they are truly historic! I don't think anyone was ready for The Tubes. There was this banquet table with a lovely food display on white linen. We thought it was an offering to the gods from Mahavishnu, ha-ha. Then the Tubes came on stage and Bill Spooner lifts the silver chafing dish cover to reveal Fee Waybil's head on a platter surrounded by radishes. What a riot! By the end of the set, the crowd seemed to want Fee's head on a platter. The highlight of the set was when my friend, Mike, threw his tennis shoe in disgust and nailed Spooner in the head! Years later, Spooner recounted that incident in a Rolling Stone interview. Looking back, Fee's theatrics were very impressive and the band performed well, but they should not have been put on that bill, but Bill Graham was always eclectic that way. Thanks again to The Vault for making these historic recordings available. Love it live. Jeff Mainard, Jamestown, CA

Listen to that dumb crowd boo after "Wonderbread". Was this the same night Fee threw bread at Mahavishnu?
