Concert Summary

More than three decades after the release of their debut A&M album in 1975, the Tubes have never received the recognition and attention from rock historians they truly deserve. They have always been a cutting edge band, and the best material in the Tubes' repertoire has been able to melt quirky humor, intricate musicianship, and radio friendly pop hooks into a memorable blend. They have always been known for putting on an incredible live show, spearheaded by front man Fee Waybill's vaudevillian stage charisma.

At the end of the day, however, the Tubes' "in-your-face" theatrics were…entire summary

Lucky enough to see them a couple of times at the Orpheum Theatre, Boston. Fantastic musically and more so theatrically. If you look at the archive photo of Fee as Quay, keep in mind that below the bottom of the picture are 12-14" platform shoes which he was pretty nimble in. At our second show one shoe broke and he almost fell over. A few moments later during the the song he muttered out "this hurts like hell" while still doing the moves! A great showman and singer. They did "It's not Unusual" by Tom Jones. Fantastic! Prairie Prince also spent a good amount of time in Chris Isaaks band. Enjoy, veterans and newbies!

My band Fleshtones opened this show (not the one from NYC, we pre-dated them), totally blowing our minds being as it was like our 2nd public performance. The Tubes were the hippest and most intelligent thing in town at the time and I think this show from before they signed was the best I ever saw them do. Each song had a complete costume change and I will never forget Fee being led from backstage in a spaceman suit and helmet, barely able to walk in it. Absolutely amazing band that never got their due. By the time they became popular, what had made them so special had been diluted. I'll never forget arriving at Winterland for a soundcheck and seeing a Tubes roadie outside on the curb polishing the cymbals. Such was their attention to detail...

Check out the recording of The Tubes from 11.21.1974 at the Record Plant - especially White Punks On Dope. Best Tubes on the Vault.

good to hear a different style of the band from the usual stuff and hits, just one note it's "quay lewd" not quay lude, sorry to be picky but everybody else seems to correct you

Awful recording. Nice as an archival piece but the sound quality blows dead bears.

This was a hot show. Regards Vince, don't forget he spent some quality time playing with Todd Rundgren too. Prairie has been playing with Todd for years, still does. I bought a Boss distortion pedal from Bill Spooner at Tubes garage sale in SF back in 1980. He probably used it in this show right here. I still use it today. Best regards to all Tubes fans!

aaah: but where is Don't Touch Me There? and of course inquiring minds should know that Vince Welnick went on to Grateful Dead--with Long, Long Way to Go Home an early '80s highlight--and then an ungrateful death. no mercy.

Fantastic, what happened to great music like this??!! American pop has become a cultural wasteland bereft of intelligence and soul.
