Concert Summary

This is a great example of a Sons of Champlin show, recorded days before the release of their second album. The Sons were very experimental and capable of smoking improvisation. Most of the songs on this set include lengthy, spontaneously occurring jams.

The show kicks off with four tracks from their forthcoming second album for Capitol Records. The first two songs feature the funky B-3 organ dominating, punctuated by chunky leads from Haggerty and the punch of the horn section. The third song is a treat for fans of this era; "Boomp Boomp Chop" fits right in with their feel-good,…entire summary

I never tire of listening to this show and the other Sons shows currently in the Vault. Cooking? You better believe it, on all four burners, cooking with gas, indeed. When they are on, they send me more than any other band on the scene at that time. Blues, funk, acid rock, they had the chops, the layers of sound, the roots, and the vision. Thanks again for this show, and I look forward to some more.

Truley one of the best when it came to just cookin'. I listened to them many time, as Tim Cain (Fig) was a personal friend. This is a great recording, but some of their best was when they were just practicing, and letting the jam take it where it went. After the Sons Tim played a with great band called "Good Dog" up in Humbolt county, before moving on to Kauai and becoming a "garlic" farmer.

Have to add my two cents here. Stone Cold Sons freak from way back in the day. Of all the Sons configurations this full complement of early arrangements is TRULY THE BEST OF ALL TIMES FROM SO MANY ANGLES. Saw this Hurricane on stage in late 1968 at the Santa Monica Civic auditorium. They opened for Jessie Colin Young who may as well never came out on stage. The Sons opening set was so FUNKY it damn near SCARRED YOU RIGHT OUT OF THE HOUSE!!! The crowd refused to let Bill and the boys leave the stage. Through the entire roady stage brake down and into better than half of the JCY set the crown including me were still yelling for the SONS RETURN. 40 years later and i still can't forget it. The lesson here, Music is real the rest is scenery. "You punk ass kids out there learn some thing about real music, this is surely one of you best chances to it".!!! Thank you Wolffy

Never thought I would have the privelege of hearing this band live. I was a musician on the East Coast and stumbled upon the first album by accident. A singer I worked with played Freedom for me and swore to me that it was Lou Rawls. Loved the cut, found the record and became a disciple. Second album was the pinnacle I can still hum the guitar solo from Love of a Woman note for note, but Follow Your Heart was still very strong. Hagerty was clearly one of the early pioneers, and had that rare ability to play great guitar solos in the middle of horn charts. A very unique discipline with few accomplished practitioners . . . requires a feel for counterpoint while sustaining an interesting melodic line and intensity in the playing. Like chewing gum and walking backwards up a down escalator all at the same time.

As I stated in the "Van Morrison" (4-26-70) concert comments. This show was recorded by "Warren Van Orden" for FM station KPFA in Berkeley. He was the host every Sunday night back in 1970-72 or earlier,of a radio show called "Stays Fresh Longer" which presented live concerts recorded around the San Francisco Bay Area at the time. What a treat to listen to every Sunday night! I now know that Mr.van Orden was part of the Fillmore family at that time. I heard this concert on this program back in early 1970. It is a pleasure to hear this again. I had a reel-to-reel recording of this show back then. But I loaned it to a couple of DJ's who worked at a "Free Formed" underground FM radio station(that rymed with ZAPpa)in Sacramento. The tape mysteriously disappeared, never to be seen again. Thank You "Wolfgang's Vault" for presenting this concert online. I haven't heard this since late 1970. In my opinion, this IS the best recorded "Sons Of Champlin" concert out there. When I mean best, I'm not just reffering to the sound Quality, but the peak at which the band performed. If you swear that the "Sons of Champlin" first and second albums were their best(like I do), then this is the concert you want to hear! This is the "SONS" I wished I could have seen. Well...at least we have this recording. Thank you again..."Wolfgangs Vault." (Keith is Sacramento)
