Concert Summary

At the time of this performance, The Rowan Brothers had yet to release an album. Signed to Columbia under the instruction of Clive Davis after a bidding war with Asylum Records' David Geffen in which Columbia doubled Geffen's offer, they would soon become the focus of an overhyped campaign that they could never live up to. They recorded their first LP with their older brother Peter's bandmate, David Grisman, producing. A few members of the …entire summary

I caught The Rowan Brothers at a free San Jose State University outdoor concert, probably summer of 1974 or 75, and remember thinking it was one of the best shows I had ever seen - great vocals, sprightly playing, good energy, and in particular, one great song with a lyric something like, "Whatsoever a man soweth, he shall also reap." - Peter may have been with them as well. Too bad the hype did them in. kevin17m

Thank you Johnny! Thank you Cory! I logged this recording and worked up the summary and I greatly appreciate your comments. Thanks for taking the time to do that. We have improved the summary accordingly. Personnel and chronology of events will be updated shortly. MrBB

Yes I played those Winterland dates. And, you're right, David did play mostly keys on stage. I also played piano on stage when we did an acoustic segment in the show.

Although The Rowan Brothers only played Fillmore West this single time, they did play Winterland a number of times. I saw them opening for the Grateful Dead on 12.12.72 (replacing the Allman Brothers, who had canceled following the unfortunate death of bassist Berry Oakley). David Grisman was a member of the stage group, but oddly enough he mostly played keyboards.

Johnny Douglas here. I am credited as drummer on this performance. I actually joined The Rowan Brothers shortly after this gig and did play on their album and subsequent tours. However Bill Kreutzmann from the Dead played drums on this particular evening. Also David Grisman on mandlin is uncredited. Just wanted to set the record straight for those who might care. Hi to Chris, Loren, David and Billy if you're out there.

The history of The Rowan Brothers, Clive Davis and Jerry Garcia is correct (save the spelling of Lorin Rowan), but the chronology is wrong. The album and the ill-fated CBS ads in Rolling Stone did not come out until mid-1972. I believe that this concert was soon after the Rowan Brothers signed to Columbia, but before the album was recorded. Since the New Riders were on Columbia as well, I suspect it was Clive Davis who got the Rowan Brothers on the bill, since they had not (to my knowledge) played a gig in the Bay Area. I know of no other Garcia performance with the Rowan Brothers.

The Rowan Brothers rehearsals were prominently displayed in the movie "Last Days of the Fillmore." You can probably find it (the rehearsal part) on YOUTUBE. I do believe "Bill Graham" is playing basketball with friends during the rehearsal.(Keith in Sacramento)
