If you read ANYTHING Pete says he credits KR with his leaps and wheelhouse strum. Keith started the lead guitar showmanship in English R&R. Read your history and give credit where it is due.

  • nedscarey Monday, May 21, 2012 7:15 pm I've loved the Stones since '64. Saw them at the Palace Theater in '65. Ticket was $2.00 (that's right two, not two hundred). Brian was still with them; "The Last Time" was the record they were promoting i.e., pre-Satisfaction. The little theater was half full ... I'll never forget it!

The Colisuem is still there even thought its Glory days have come and gone. The Who played there as well as many other Great Great shows. The Stones even released a live album from these two nights. What great memories. The whole gang was there from W&M and CNC (now CNU)!!

Just found this site AMAZING!! Just like yesterday. Wonder what happened to the idiot who ran across the stage? Way to go Keith!!! Fantastic stage w/all the ramps and rotating parts and cherry pickers. THE GREATEST ROCK AND ROLL BAND EVER!!!!!

It may not be cool for KR to go swinging his guitar at the crazy fan but remember this is just a little over a year after John Lennon was gunned down by a 'fan' in NYC. Performers were a bit jumpy when it came to fans running on stage. Paul Simon had a fan run at him on stage at his concert in Central Park (with Art Garfunkel) earlier the same year. This happened while he was singing a song called 'The Late Great Johnny Ace' which was, in part, a tribute to Lennon.

  • noise10 Tuesday, October 11, 2011 5:50 am From a strictly instrumental standpoint, I'd rather listen to hammered, sloppy, out-of-tune Rolling Stones than a lot of other stuff that's out there but, man, I find Mick on this tour to be unlistenable and unwatchable. I'm glad he found a decent voice coach later on - despite what Keith wrote in his book.

  • TMc Friday, June 03, 2011 5:10 pm Maybe not the best, but 81 was the last great Stones tour with no back up singers, no supporting musicians except for Stu, Mac, and Bobby. Ronnie and Keith on backing vocals, just like it's supposed to be. No huge stages. No inflatables. Just good time music.

  • stanislavf Monday, May 23, 2011 12:05 pm Billiam, I think that you need to think of "best" and ratings in a different way. Technical musician without passion and staying power is simply technically good. The individual musicians within the Stones may not make the "top 100" lists of various magazines (which I am guessing you are referring to), but the sum is more than the addition of the parts. The Stones had the ability to tap into the psyche of a large audience and maintain that tap for an extremely long time. That is part of what makes them great. They were not one hit wonders and much of their music is still enjoyed today. Certainly people who blindly say something like "greatest rock and roll band of all time" are overstating the case, but only because they don't define their terms. Dylan is also a terrible musician--I don't think we need to go into his vocal abilities either:-). Does that make him bad? Great for music is the ability to influence an entire generation, the ability to influence another generation, the ability to influence OTHER MUSICIANS and music. In the latter case, the Stones may not have been as influential as the Beatles, Dylan, the Who, and others, but certainly, as one of the bands that influenced multiple generations and defined the concept of rock for those generations, it is hard to ignore The Rolling Stones.

Great compositions, very long staying power, and fun concerts, but as musicians they were/are decidedly mediocre. None (except maybe Mick Taylor) are top 100 musicians, although I think Mick is a top 25 vocalist. Go ahead, throw tomatoes at me.
