Concert Summary

In the last 20 years, The Rolling Stones have done their legacy something of a disservice. Swaddling the back-alley, whiskey-and-opium menace in Vegas-style pomp and gloss has tarnished the memory of the Stones in their prime. And not in an "I-can't-believe-they're-still-at-it-at-their-age-how-embarrassing" sort of way, either; the dismissive ageism is a crutch for those jealous that a bunch of sexagenarian Englishmen are having more fun than they are. What's missing is that element of chance - that harrowing feeling that…entire summary

Been fortunate to see the Stones with Brian, Mick Taylor and Ron Wood and give the 78 tour a B . I was at Soldier Field 2 days after this show driving up from Ohio; Probably the wildest weekend I have ever not remembered....The Stones ROCKED the F**K OUT!!

I have never commented on a show before, but I have to tell you that this show CHANGED MY LIFE. Really. First, about the scene outside. The show was announced in the morning of show day and everyone (including me) didn't have a ticket. A glue sniffer I knew in the area told me that the way to get in was up the emergency stairs. Everyone had this idea too. So to make a long story short, a bunch of fans went for the stairs while the hundreds of cops went to break up a fight or something. I am in the back of the building in the alleyway. I had seen the cops hard handed approach to law and order that night so I held back. In about 3 minutes all of the fans that went up were coming down in a panic with cops hitting them to get them down and out. Then in the alleyway where all of the fans were pushed about 6 horses with cops were using their patrons to hit these people. One guy was on a rope and he was hit until he fell. It was a madhouse. I look up to the second floor and there is mick who's watching the scene! I waved to him and he gave me a wave and a "shhhhhh" so nobody would see him and the band too! Then I let the cute girl with the green eyes next to me see mick. We hung out all night, got picked up for trespassing at the RenCen where the band was staying (we had to go to the after party, ya know) and stayed out all night with this woman who was 9 years older. I eventually got thrown out of my house for not coming home at night (wouldn't you?) and then we went cross country where we got in a lot trouble and had a great time. She married a friend and had a kid with him. I still live in CA too and saw her about 3 years ago. She is a bank president! HA! I have thought of this show numerous times and this is first time I have heard the show or even saw the date that changed me forever. Glad I didn't get in!

I've seen the Stones over 20 times, ranging from 1972 through the present. I've only caught one real clunker, and another night when Keith was just terrible for the first half of the show (and looked half unconscious). But each tour, there are special nights, the nights Keith referred to in his famous quote, and this show was one of those nights, with arguably the greatest performance of Jumping Jack Flash they ever played. Only the legendary performance in Brussels on 10/17/73 matches it. Savor it folks, savor it...

What a pleasant suprise this was. Great song selection. When asked if the Rolling Stones were really the "World's Greatest Rock Band", Keith Richards once answered "Some nights we are and some nights we're not." I think they were this night. This is a nice reminder that before we made them an untouchable institution, they were a flat out fun.
