Concert Summary

The Pretenders have been a powerful force in music for nearly three decades, although today only vocalist/guitarist Chrissie Hynde and drummer Martin Chambers remain from the original 1978 lineup. After their first few albums, the band became mainly a vehicle for Hynde's songwriting and distinct vocals; but in the beginning, when this concert was captured, they were truly a band of collective strength and talent.

Carefully combining punk, new…entire summary

Ah, The Pretenders in their hey-dey...echoing a lot of the sentiments expressed here, the death of James Honeymoon Scott was tragic indeed - this band was incredibly hot (I still love them but the original line-up remains the best IMHO)...saw them in '81 at Philadelphia's Tower Theatre, right after II came out...absolutely amazing show and this is a great recording too.

killer show. saw them in '83 in Portland, but James was gone by then. Most people today don't remember how much this band kicked ass.

Sorry for the mis-information, Chrissy was pregnant w/Ray Davies child, not another mans,.................(rumor spreader.)

Chrissy Hynde. Last time I saw Chrissy she was pregnant on stage w/the Simple Minds lead singers baby. Time before that, she was touring w/Iggy Pop, he finished his set, she came out w/a towel, wiped the stage floor and knelt down and kissed it. She truly has a deep love for music, to this day, she is my favorite female recording artist.

I saw this lineup in 1981 in Minneapolis - the day Pretenders II was released. An incredible concert - and I do remember Martin's watery drum kit. It's hard to explain how hot they were at the time -- it was the hippest show of the year. We hung out at the back of the theater waiting for Chrissie to come out. She ended up going out the front . . . but we saw Pete, James, and Martin jam into a limo. I was close to Pete and told him "great show" -- he said "arrrrrrrrgh". RIP Pete and James.

Crissy was the thin, tall, mysterious girl, always dressed in black with lots of dark makeup, hanging casually against the back wall of the lobby of the old WHK auditorium, rechristened as the Grande Ballroom Cleveland--and now the Agora Ballroom at 50th and Euclid. Even then, she was one cool cat. I'm thinking that we saw lots of great shows together. She learned from many of the best.

Wow, a concert I almost really saw. Later this same year they played at Heatwave at Mosport Toronto. I won't say i had a case of the hots for Chrissy from then on, just in case DredwifeyLisas sees this (she rags on me anytime Chrissy shows up someplace). Coolest part of the show was when James Honeyman Scott (IIRC) sat at the edge of the stage and Chambers kept bouncing drum sticks off the cymbal and whizzing past Scott's ear and out into the audience. Good times (only bad thing was that The Clash were a no show!) little did we know that we were at the very end of "pre AIDs" sex!

Caught them at the Santa Monica Civic around this time. Great show. Kid, Stop Your Sobbing, Talk of the Town...
