Concert Summary

The Power Station was a fluke occurrence amongst musicians and friends that was never a planned venture. When Duran Duran bassist (John Taylor) and guitarist (Andy Taylor) decided to take a much deserved break from their non-stop three-year recording/touring process, one of the projects they agreed to was to play on some backing tracks (with Chic's drummer Tony Thompson and Chic bassist Bernard Edwards producing) for their friend (ex-groupie and model) Bebe Buell's debut album. Among the songs chosen for her by the Taylors was a rocked out re-make of the T-Rex classic, "Get It On (Bang a…entire summary

Des Barres isn't the only guy singing. And Des Barres is Great, by the way. He was great in Silverhead, and in Detective. He's great here. But the rapper on the Obsession Medely is one or both of the Taylor Brothers. Hey Wolfgang, please post up some Detective Live stuff, you know you have some.

Love Michael Des Barres. I loved him in Silverhead, Detective, and Power Station. He's all over the stage that's why he gives such a Mick Jaggery vocal performance. If you were moving across the stage like he did, you'd sound like that too. He's not standing there still like he's in a studio. I like the Power Station record, too bad Robert Palmer chose to opt-out of the band when he did. He left them no choice but to find an available singer, and they found a great one. Now this setlist could have had less cheesy covers. But MDB is a great frontman.

P.S. Having just defended this recording to a certain degree I must agree w/ the majority....MDB is a poor fit at best....his voice is much too thin and high 4 this particular project. While he has his strengths, listen past the lead vocal to the *tight* musicianship! Lots of tasty horn & drum pocket moments *at the very least*....

Just started listenin. "Murderess" is an ambitious tune to begin with...I compare Power Station w/ Def Lepard.....*wait*! hear me out...this band is a *STUDIO* band just like DL...if u tuned into this concert lookin 4 it 2 sound like the record u're missing the point of the musicianship....the 1st thing I noticed on 'Murderess' was Tony's *kick-ass* tight precision and now I'm on track 3 and it continues...Track 2 was pretty decent vocally too....but again you must look thru the production and listen to the musicianship.....just my 2 shillings....

C'mon, Des Barres was great! Palmer was a superb singer but when it came to whipping a crowd into a frenzy, Des Barres ranks up there with the best frontmen in rock n roll. I think he does a great job here and I wish I had seen them during that 1985 tour.

I just listened to the show entirely through, and I don't think Des Barres is awful, per se, just an awful fit here. On his own tracks, or any of the covers (Dancing, Some Guys, etc.) he's plenty servicable (although his schtick is irritating), it's on the songs original done by Palmer where he completely falls apart. Instead of going his own direction with the tunes, he appears to be (with what seems to be the help of some filters) trying his best to emulate Palmer's vocals from the record while owning a voice that functions best in a much higher key. The inevidable outcome of a project hastily thrown together when the intended singer bails I guess.

Des Barres is certainly no Robert Palmer (few are) but as a huge fan of the band I'm thankful for anything I can get as live recordings have been very hard to come by. Now if we can get the www.liveconcerts.com House of Blues show from 1996 and an even harder to come by Andy Taylor Thunder tour show, I will be one extremely grateful fun.

wow...des barres is awful here. granted, i've never heard of him before, especially connected with TPS, but seriously? these songs would almost certainly be better as instrumentals! thanks for posting the concert though...i'd like to see more, preferably with palmer!
