Concert Summary

Headlining a bill that featured Robert Johnson and The Knack, the Police hit the stage at the University of California at Berkeley's Zellerbach Hall. It was their first visit to Berkeley (although Stewart Copeland announces "I went to school here about five years ago"), and they were still making their mark in the States. The trio's aggressive, hard edged attack combined with their eccentric take on reggae's groove was beginning to capture the attention of American audiences. Although all three members had extensive musical…entire summary

I was fortunate to see The Police on there I believe second tour @ The Bottom Line in NYC... Sting was wearing a jet pilots flight suit with platinum bleached hair.. Stuart Cope broke 3 snare heads ! Great energy Sting was wet in sweat the whole- set.. Turned me on-to New Wave... One of the greatest power trios of all time !! Michael

Very light on the bass. Alot of those board recordings were done live off the house console. The house mixer doing a quick mix via headphones so he could have a reference for the band. Very easy in that environment to undermix the bass because it is leaking into the cans like crazy. I used to do live radio broadcasts from a lot of venues in DC and we would have to make a reference tape for the FCC in case someone filed a language complaint. We were under instructions to stress the vocals to make sure every word could be heard. Great to hear these performances live and in the flesh all these years later. Whatever imperfections they may have in recording quality are compensated by the power of these performers.

Was not a big fan back at the time, might have been the reference to Nabokov in Close to Me that seemed pretentious and a little haughtily obscure. Just saw them on a recently filmed PBS concert special, though. Man, can Stewart Copeland bang those drums! And even knowing intellectually that they were just a trio, seeing all of that sound coming out of just those three instruments was very cool. Appreciate them a lot more now. Incidentally, when Roxanne first hit the radio back in 1978, my friend, who was a trained singer, smugly informed me that the way he sang, Sting's voice would not hold out for more than a couple of years. Wrong!

dwacey/ MONDAY FEB 23, 2009 saw the police jan. 10 1981 at msg. my gilfriend jane bought me two tickets as a christmas gift. of course,i took her to the show.(probably)their greatest single performance,it is to this day one of the best concerts i have ever attended, and i've been to quite a few over the years. sting was crazy, the crowd was crazy, you won't see shows like that anymore. was on the edge of my seat the whole time, (jannie had to hold me down!) anyone who was there will tell you how intence they were.the ticket stub and w.p.l.j. bumper sticker are two of my most worldly keepsakes.

First saw the police december 79 in very sweaty, former bus shed in Leeds by this time the screaming had started but they were awesome. Many more shows from this u.s. tour and the following one were recorded for/broadcast on local u.s radio so there must be plenty more out there. My only problem with the police throughout their career including the reformation, and I've spoken to Stewart about it, is that the set never changed from night to night. For the recent tour many more songs were rehearsed than ever made it to the set list - compare this with recent shows by u2, springsteen, bowie etc and it's ridiculous that three such talented musicians can't throw in a couple of variations to the set each night.

I love the police, but I;m not impressed with show. It's not horrible, but in my opinion, it's certainly not good. It has it's up's and down's...Born in the 50's was a highlight for me...the improve was not impressive, I've heard much better...I give it a 3/5 overall.

I used to have the vinyl boot of the show more than 25 years ago. Regarding the mix, you'd think this was a drummer guitarist and a singer. Where's the bass?
