Concert Summary

This concert would conclude the Dead and New Riders of the Purple Sage's final, five-night run of concerts at the Fillmore East. This first set of the evening features an inspired set by New Riders of the Purple Sage featuring Jerry Garcia on pedal steel guitar. Tight arrangements of the classic songs from their debut LP had been prominent throughout this run, and this final night was no different.

Also of note are the cover of John Forgerty's "Lodi" and, although ragged, the loose arrangements of the Band's "The Weight" and the Stones' classic "Honky Tonk Women." It's particularly…entire summary

Attended similar performance same year at Pepperland near San Francisco, with Jerry Garcia on pedal steel. Is Last Lonely Eagle a great song or was I just at peak high when they played it? Hadn't heard it since the concert, and it still sounds great to me tonight.

Was a Chauffer for many years in New York - John's Voice was excellent then and for many many years after- Saw them go through changes and band members, but always sounding Better- Sang their songs to my children when they were first born and kept them quiet and happy. May they live on as One of the Greatest Country Rock and Roll Bands of All- Good Luck- jbfg1@juno.com

I was at this concert too and it was great, the recording doesn't do the atmosphere of it full justice Gerry being on Pedal was magical and the crowd was so enthusiastic just electric...The New Riders just played the Bearsville Theater here in Woodstock with Buddy Cage on Pedal and Aaron Prof. Louie on Accordion and his great band the Crowmatix opened the show...Happy New Year America 21 days left to our long Bush nightmare..!

Back then I wouldn't listen to anything wihout a pedal steel on the record and a fat number in my hand. Good God, these guys are the gold standard for the feel of that time. Takes me back with a *&^%eatin grin!

I never had the pleasure of enjoying a show at the Fillmore East. I am a native New Yorker. The Palladium on 14th street was my Fillmore. I have always wanted to here JG with NRPS. "yes i know there are albums". This is special. Thanks RS

I was at this show. One of the circumstances that made it so memorable, besides the quality of both bands and the incredible length of time they both played, was that was the day Bill Graham held his press conference announcing he was closing both Fillmores. We knew it would be the last night we would see the Dead and the Riders at the Fillmore East. Incredible Memories.

chefjth2, Listen to Dick's Picks Number 19 and other Dead live. We didn't need no stinkin' 0's and 1's. There should be a monument to the guy or gal that invented stereo tape recorders (maybe there already is).

wow, I was in the backseat of 1968 Dodge Charger, playing touchie-feelie with my best girl, had NRPS on the 8-track, gawd.... what I wouldn't give to be 16 again... :-)
