Concert Summary

This fourth night of the Dead and New Riders of the Purple Sage's final stint at the soon to be closing Fillmore East, is to many their best overall performance of the run.

The NRPS set, featuring Jerry Garcia on pedal steel, once again contains much of the classic material from their first and second albums. Cover versions of the Rolling Stones' "Connections" and "Honky Tonk Woman," Billie Joe Royal's "Down In The Boondocks," and the Band's "The Weight" also spice up the setlist. Prior to the set closer, "Honky Tonk Woman," the band spontaneously takes a

this is pure raw beginings of the dead...david nelson and jerry intertwine guitar/pedal steel brilliantly....

It was Pittsburgh '71 and I had never seen the Grateful Dead, my mind kicking off when NRPS warmed up with lil' Marmaduke in a cowboy hat and a ponytail down his back, craning his neck up to the mike with his dreadnought guitar as big as him, crooning like a clear creek I had seen up in the mountains somewhere, Garcia pedal steeling - wow...never saw them since, but this is a great reminder. Thanks so much.

The 1st big name act I ever saw in a bar. Being from the sticks in upstate N.Y. - I had no idea you could see an act of this caliber up close and personal. The sorely missed Shaboo Inn in Willamantic, CT. was the venue in early '77. Fond memories indeed.

NRPS: It has been too long since I have listened to them. One of the best concert bands that I have seen. I remember seeing them at U of Rochester [NY] around 1973/4. They blew me away that night. The concert stated with the song "Panama Red" and after that....my mind is a little fuzzy to remember now. After listing to this concert recording , I wonder how they fell out of my prime inner circle of listing music....I quess that I will have to make some adjustments to my disk rotation. Please keep bring concert recordings like this.
