Concert Summary

This King Biscuit broadcast was compiled from two sets on the same night at New York's Academy of Music in 1973, just after the band had released its landmark album, The Adventures Of Panama Red. The line-up had solidified and no longer contained members of The Grateful Dead.

Like their counterparts in the San Francisco scene such as the Dead, the Airplane, and Hot Tuna, the New Riders had found an audience in the pioneer fans of what would become the "jam band" movement.

The group was enjoying its biggest commercial success during this period and, although they often…entire summary

One of my first concerts, great to hear this tape of the show. Henry was my favorite song of the show. I am born anew thanks to your concert vault.

This captures the Riders at their peak...Could have had a few more songs from Marmaduke but Torbert was rockin this night. I was at this show and the earlier one with Commander Cody doing a rockabilly set.

I too was at these shows. They were always a hot show at the old Academy (which to me is forever the home of Hot Tuna). Loved this version of the lineup. Was a big loss when Torbet left the following year with Skip Battin replacing him. If I'm not mistaken, these shows were released as the lp, Home Home on the Range. I recently put that lp on the old turntable-awesome album. Produced by Garcia (I think)-the sound is fantastic.

this set is a great representative version of the band at that point in time. I saw them at the Calderone music hall in Hempstead NY around then (now defunct) and they were phenomenal!! Saw them several times since, most recently at the Bolton Center in Bayshore NY in 2007 & (although we miss Marmaduke) they still kicked ass! Seminal Country-Rock band of talented musicians & Dave Nelson & Buddy Cage still kick it up with the new guys! If they come local, check it out, you won't be disappointed!!

great show, saw both late shows 23 & 24 and just about every late show they played at the academy in the early 70's, cody's gang always adds to the shows, been to several recent shows in the past couple of years, they still put on a good show

I miss these freakin' guys. Saw some great shows in the mid 70s in NJ at the good old Capitol Theatre.

Commander Cody is also playing piano on "School Days". The Lost Planet Airmen were also on the bill with the Riders, as they were many times (the bands shared management), and since Cody knew the material he sat in on numerous songs throughout the four shows (2 days early and late).

Got to work a couple dates from this tour. I am partial to the Garcia era, earlier lineups of the band but this works fine too. Cage is a fine player too. The adds of Cody and Andy Stein were fun to hear on this. They'll always have a special place in my sometimes shit-kickin' Rock and Roll heart.

And they're still at it. Nelson and Cage are still jammin' at smaller venues. The 300 seat Sellersville, Pa. theater is always a blast. Check out newridersofthepurplesage.com for fan reviews and dates. DougfromPhilly
