Concert Summary

The Motels held court in the red-hot LA club scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s, where bands like the Go Gos, Mötley Crüe, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers were also emerging and developing. They were fronted by singer Martha Davis, a charismatic performer who kept the band extremely radio friendly but with just enough edginess to maintain its street cred.

This show was recorded in 1979 on the band's first national U.S. tour, when…entire summary

Always liked The Motels, and yes this is a really good sounding recording! Marty, that keyboard jam in the "Instrumental" piece is outstanding...I love keyboards. So that was a PolyMoog eh? Love it....

Like many, I saw the Motels at Madame Wong's West. The best concert I saw during the late '70's L.A. indie era. If Martha had kept the Jourards, and not stuck Tim McGovern in the band, there is no telling how good they could have been. I actually saw Martha and a new Motels play at the O.C. Fair, opening for the Go-Go's, and she still sounded great. Shel, I would love to buy that CD, if you can make another copy. E-mail me at wellreadman@aol.com.

I was really looking for the song, "Only the Lonely," and didn't find it. You know..."...its like I told you, only the lonely can play...." Do you have such a concert where they sing that song? Matt

The Motels are awesome!! I recorded a show on cassette from a live radio broadcast on WBCN from the Paradise Theatre in Boston on 7/10/80. Miraculously it survived and I transfered it to cd. Still sounds great!! XMotel if you want a copy let me know!! Shel

It's quite a kick to hear this show almost thirty years after we played it. This set was basically identical to our set list when we played Madame Wong's in L.A.'s Chinatown. We recorded most of these tunes for the first LP but not all of them made it. Although synthesizers in 1979 were always going into the repair shop, I miss those warm PolyMoog synth sounds...and I really enjoyed playing keyboard with my brother Jeff on guitar. This lineup was my favorite version of the Motels.

I love theis site. I saw The Motels back in the Early 80's at Toada in New Haven CT; I was so blown away I wnr to theier next Show the next night at Stage West, in West Hartford Ct, where I actually took my wife, who also loved the Show. MD was truly intense. I haad heard that MD was ill and the band was no longer touring. I'm glad to see that she is well, she is a true talent. Thank you Wolfster

Great, tight band and Martha is gorgeous vocally and visually! I loved "All Four One," and performed a couple of songs from that album when I was a younger vocalist in a band. I also had an old cassette of the group live (headlining for Danny Johnson and the Bandits)at Hop Singh's in L.A. I recall Jourard's great guitar sounds being very prominent on the recording. MD sounds similar in tone to another popular vocalist of that time, Nick Gilder. Good show, Herr Wolfmeister!

This is one of the best sounding Motels shows out there with some great unreleased early gems thrown in like 'Boys' and 'Toujours Gaie'. Song 1 is 'Route 66', Song 7 is called 'Porn Reggae', song 10 is 'Dalmation' song 13 is called 'Dressing Up', song 14 is called 'People, Places and Things'.

The Motels played at the Catamaran Hotel in San Diego, probably in '79 ... probably part of this same tour. I lived just a few blocks from the Catamaran, but chose to stay home and record the show live (from the broadcast by KGB-FM) while my friends went to the show. My cassette tape of the show was stolen (with others) from my car just a few months later. Now, almost thirty years later, listening to this recording I'd swear I'm listening to my old tape of the San Diego show (although the audience isn't quite as rambunctious as the Catamaran crowd). I'm glad to have my cassette tape back! ;-)
