Concert Summary

Formed in 1952 by pianist John Lewis, vibraphonist Milt Jackson, bassist Percy Heath and drummer Kenny Clarke, the Modern Jazz Quartet played at the first Newport Jazz Festival in 1954 with an intriguing variation on the lineup that featured Horace Silver on piano. The following year they appeared at George Wein's festival with the more familiar lineup of Lewis, Jackson, Heath and drummer Connie Kay, the same unit that appeared at the 1959 Newport Jazz Festival. Their genteel, neo-classical approach to counterpoint, blending blues and fugues, marked the MJQ as one of the most inventive and…entire summary

However whatever, in Between Miles and the Grateful Dead, Mingus and Little Feat, music is a question of good taste and quality..... make your pick.... these guys were great even if i was only 5 years old at this 1959 Newport Festival..... the music never stopped.

There is no question that the MJQ along with the Miles Davis groups, The Dave Brubeck Quartet and others of that era represent a time that we will never see or hear again in American Jazz. They were the true innovators and leaders who performed at the top of their game every time. These Newport Jazz Festival recordings are priceless histories of the greatest time in jazz.

It's a real pleasure to hear this wonderful quartet again. I must find my old vinyl LPs of the MJQ and give them a listen-it's been too long since I have experienced their unique sound. Well done for posting this great concert!

This is when the Newport Jazz Festival had real Jazz Artists, unlike the majority of musicians that they now have playing there. This is a great CD.

There never was a group like the MJK. There probably never will be again. Each member was a star and each contributed to the whole.

normbrust - You asked about a volume control- there is one on the player- just point the mouse cursor at the sound icon at the top right of the player and it will open :)

Meanwhile this is totally awesome music. And to think that I was in high school when MJQ played this gig. My, the time does fly.
