Concert Summary

Here we have a wonderful example of early Marshall Tucker Band live, just a few months after the release of their first album. Performances such as this one cemented their reputation as being the second greatest Southern rock band - right behind their good friends, The Allman Brothers Band, who headlined this night's show.

Listening to this performance, it is immediately apparent that this was no ordinary Southern rock band. With its amalgamation of soulful gospel singing, bluesy guitar riffs and jazzy…entire summary

I am so stoked to have found your site! Grew up just outside of Spartanburg SC, so Tucker is in my blood! These guys were so tight. Love CDB, Allman Bros, Wet Willie, and Skynrd but MTB is the best southern rock band ever.

The Marshall Tucker Band is the best Southern Rock band of the 70's, and arguably the best of all time. Better than the Allman Bro's Band, Better than Lynyrd Skynyrd, Better than 38special and all other SRB's of the 70's. You can make an argument that Poco (early Poco in my opinion) was more important in the formation of the Southern Rock genre but in my opinion, MTB took southern rock to it's highest heights of musicianship, song writing, lyrical standards and variations of the theme. The Allman Bro's band was great but they were also a blues band, a rock band and even a free form jazz band while MTB stuck to it's Southern Rock core. Thank you MTB for decades of listening brilliance. God Bless both Tommy & Toy.

The Tucker boys are right up there with the Allman Brothers as the best of Southern Rock and Roll. They took this boy from Jersey and opened the great sounds of the South to him. Long live the Marshall Tucker Band!!!!

Like CVGreg noted below, I was at this show, Marshall Tucker was an unknown on the West Coast and they blew the doors off the Winterland. Then the Allman Brothers, what a great show, what I can recall anyway. Many shows therafter too.

Tucker was absolutely one of the best live acts ever-they blew me away more than once but Nassau Colosium in 78 set the record-5 encores!!

Seen them twice in the 70's and this recording is just like being there - what a great band! From the question as to how Toy died, I'd heard that he had a bad sleep apnea problem coupled with pneumonia. Nice that Grey is still keeping the band touring but sad that they got into the political arena and hasn't made a magical musical standpoint that they used to (so generously) back in the day. Long live the old MTB! SM
