Concert Summary

Songwriter, bandleader, social critic, poet and humorist all apply to The Kinks frontman Ray Davies. Unlike other British Invasion-era bandleaders, he didn't seem comfortable as a frontman. He wasn't cute like The Beatles or cocky like the Stones. The band's sound was also different. Less rooted in American music, The Kinks had a more overtly English sound. Davies often…entire summary

I was at this show and the one the previous night in Santa Monica, too. We had left the show in SM and drove all night up to Berkeley to see some friends for the weekend--hey, we were 19, is there any other explanation needed? When we got there someone told us the Kinks were playing that night at Winterland, so we headed over to San Francisco and easily scored some tickets. We also tried to score some hash, but it turned out to be a cake of Lawry's Seasoning Salt or some such crud, it certainly didn't get us high! Anyway, the show was even better in some ways the second time around--it was looser and more theatrical. Ray seemed like he was a bit loaded, but he still put on a great show. It's really miraculous to find these two shows on this site! This little pilgrimage was a major life-changing event for me, so how cool is it to have the music preserved here. Now, if we could only have recorded the drive up on Highway 5....

I was at this show in 77, a great show! They had not played the USA in several years due to VISA issues (as best I recall). Love the closer.

The Soap Opera songs (Rush Hour Blues, the medley) are perhaps the best I've ever heard them play.
