Concert Summary

Songwriter, bandleader, social critic, poet, and humorist all apply to the Kinks' front man Ray Davies. Unlike other British Invasion-era bandleaders, he didn't seem comfortable as a front man. He wasn't cute like the Beatles or cocky like the Stones. The band's sound was also different. Much less rooted in American music, the Kinks had a more overtly English sound. Davies often sang in a shy, insecure voice over some of the wildest and rawest music anybody had ever heard. Davies' songwriting rapidly developed. Soon enough, his anthems of unrequited love transformed into beautiful pop songs…entire summary

First time i saw them was at the Tivoli Garden in Copenhagen 1969. Later same evening I enjoyed their show in The Revolution , Copenhagen too. Much better show and great atmosphere there. Next time June 1972, Roskilde, 1973/4 with the Preservation show .....and last time with the Phobia show. seen Ray Davies solo since, bur the magic is not there. I miss the amazing Dave Davies, who really are the soul of the KINKS

Saw them in Norwich England with Spooky Tooth, cost about 2 dollars to get in. Kinks were always good just didn't get the recognition the pretty boys did. Oh well, rock and roll can be hard. The opening licks of You really got me set the world on fire!!

oooheee, i remember them kinks at johnson gym in albuquerque in the 80's and how dave davies played to the blonde in the row in front of me, we were way down front and how they wore these white shirts that got so sweaty and how crisp and loud it was. this brings it all back.... sorta.

Got to see Ray and Dave in one of their famous on-stage fights, thought at the time it was an act. Avory threw a stick at Dave as the brothers engaged in a pushing match while both kept playing. (Ohio Theatre, Columbus, OH, maybe 1983?)About the same time that Bonnie Bramblett beat up Elvis Costello, also here in Columbus. I wish D & R could get things together for one more Kinks album.

I felt real lucky to see them in 1969, right in the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, for free, right after my parents had bought us dinner at a cafe across the way. They never did get why I'd want to skip coffee and dessert to get closer to that awful loud music, and I didn't have the musical vocabulary to tell them in their own terms what a big deal the Kinks were. (I never even realized they'd been barred from the USA.) Totally blew me away with their wit and power. And their (arguably) greatest songs hadn't even been written yet....
