Concert Summary

Songwriter, bandleader, social critic, poet, and humorist all apply to the Kinks front man Ray Davies. Unlike other British Invasion-era bandleaders, he didn't seem comfortable as a front man. He wasn't cute like the Beatles or cocky like the Stones. The band's sound was also different. Much less rooted in American music, the Kinks had a more overtly English sound. Davies often sang in a shy, insecure voice over some of the wildest and rawest music anybody had ever heard. Davies' songwriting rapidly developed and soon enough his anthems of unrequited love transformed into beautiful pop…entire summary

The Village Green Preservation Society and Something Else are the most underrated LPs to come out of the 60s. I've only seen the Kinks once ("Sleepwalker" era) - they were fantastic, but they weren't covering any of material from the previously mentioned recordings. I would love to have seen them do some of that stuff. The Picture Book cut from this recording is a great highlight. Thanks!

Track 4 is acturally a medley of two songs: Picture Book>People take Pictures of Each Other, another song from Village Green Preservation Society.

Granted this is not one of Ray's electrifying performances, but it is still a (so far) wonderful snapshot of the band still rocking the house. The Alcohol cut is priceless. Also, many of these soundboards of the Kinks suffer from not the best mix for the band, heavy on Ray's vocals - not much mix blend of the band. This recording has one of the strongest band mixes of the kinks I've heard from these live tapes - in fact Ray's vocals could actually be turned up a little bit! So this may be a lower key show, but probably one of the better recordings so far of the touring band. I look forward to many more Kinks live show releases, jeez, hopefully we've only heard a few!

Nobody's perfect, but the Davies' lows beat most of our highs!

Wow, I really expected them to be better live than they were at this venue. I'm really dissapointed! I think Ray was really stoned!
