Concert Summary

The Kinks began as an early-'60s British Invasion pop group and gradually became a vehicle for Ray Davies' profound rock 'n' roll poetry and his charismatic live persona.

The Kinks were a great live act, as proven here. For reasons that have never really been explained, the Kinks were unable to tour the states from 1966 through early 1969, so the band mostly remained in the U.K. During this period, lead vocalist/songwriter/guitarist, Ray Davies, became more and more involved in lyrical themes that were increasingly introspective.

It was during this period that he wrote what…entire summary

What a great live period for The Kinks. Just before the massive recognition for One For The Road and just after the concept album period of the early '70s. Highlighting great tunes from Schoolboys In Disgrace and the brand new (and highly underrated) Sleepwalker album. Creatively this is an amazing period. Sleepwalker just released, Misfits being recorded, Low Budget a year later....The Kinks were on a roll. God save The Kinks!!!

Robbo4, when I hit U.C. Santa Barbara that fall of '77, people were still raving about that Anaheim Stadium show. Glad you saw and got off on it-- wish I had. Wasn't there supposed to have been a nearly as great one the previous summer, featuring Sabbath? (or was it Deep Purple..? Conversations thirty years gone, you know how it can be.)

If you like the Kinks Live check out the 2 album set "To the Bone" "Do it Again" and "I'm not like anybody else" are the best versions of these songs. God I love these guys

I caught the Kinks that summer at Anaheim Stadium (Orange County, California) second on the bill (but first in our hearts!!!) with Alice Cooper in a concert that also featured The Tubes, Nazereth, and The Sha Na Na (I wonder if those greasers ever got tired of being booed off of the stage?) The Kinks went on about a half an hour before dusk and played a blazing set in support of their Sleepwalker album. It was only my third concert ever and cemented my interest in seeing every cool band that came down the pike. 600 or so shows later have still got me wanting for more (although the ridiculous prices and the Bush ravaged economy have cut deeply into my attendence...) I miss Dave Davies with his strangled backing vocals and extraordinarily under-rated guitar blasts. We still have Ray though; the "poet laureate" of rock and roll. As it's been said so many times before, "May god save the Kinks!" They sure have saved me much more than once...

I think they might have been one of the first concerts I attended at Stony Brook University in the gym. About the same time Iron Butterfly and 10 Wheel Drive were on tour together. I was always impressed by their quality of music and lyrics they fused together.
