Concert Summary

Songwriter, bandleader, social critic, poet, and humorist all apply to The Kinks front man Ray Davies. Unlike other British Invasion-era bandleaders, he didn't seem comfortable as a front man. He wasn't cute like the guys in The Beatles or cocky like Jagger from the Stones. The band's sound was also different. Much less rooted in American music, The Kinks had a more…entire summary

puttering around the house when it started I thought "uh-oh" but then the tight sloppiness won me over. By the time Ray got to his stand-up during "Alcohol" I was just sitting and listening, fascinated. Then excercising and "Dry Bones" during "Skin & Bones": the ragtime took over. The tempo of the encore, with the manic guitar and drum solos, was perfect! thanks WGV peeps!

the first Kinks show I saw at the Felt Forum, oh man, it was 74 I think, I was in no way prepared, the front of the aisles leading up to the stage were full of a mix of sprayed beer and vomit, when they did Alcohol Ray had a case of cans of beer and he shook them up and popped the tops, and the audience was at the ready armed with their own 12 oz'ers with which to retaliate. My friends and I always partied at a place in the Village called the Red Witch before the shows we saw, beer (the worst EVER) was two buxs a pitcher and we used to chug pitchers! So when we got to the Forum we were totally in synch with the Kinks and the crowd. Anyone remember the streaker at the Felt Forum show maybe circa 75-76? Me and almost all of the two dozen or so of my friends who were seated together all got naked after that and streaked the upper balcony, we got back to find our clothes misplaced. Dave Moyer, if you are alive and reading this, I owe you one :-D peaceand love to Wolfgangs Friends, long live the memory of Bill Graham and long live the Kinks

You never knew what you were going to get with the Kinks. Ray not wanting to sing...racing through songs as if they were trying to get away with the cash...horns flat and timing lost. And just when you were thinking "If they hate this so much, why do they keep doing it?...they would tear off a performance that was so intense, so fun, so confident that you would forgive anything and everything. Like this one. And it always would help if you could be as "lit" as Ray!

Track #8, listed here as "Picture Book," is actually a medley consisting of "Picture Book," "People Take Pictures of Each Other" and "David Watts."

What a landmark in Kinkdom history. I was about 30 feet off to the left of Dave's side of the stage. Ray was trashed (explains the loud singing). I took a picture of Ray balancing a Rheingold beer can on his head during "Alcohol". The antithesis of the prepackaged shows popular today (Police, U2, Coldplay). This show, along with the many Faces shows I attended, will keep me warm when all the fossil fuels have been used up in 2009.

I was lucky enough to see the Kinks on more than one occassion. In the post Beatle age of the seventies there were still enough of us going to concerts as dedicated fans with all the bands lyrics hanging on the end of our tongues. Kinks concerts were joyous sing alongs. LONG LIVE THE KINKS!
