Concert Summary

For pioneering jazz pianist Herbie Hancock, who played in the Miles Davis Quintet in the '60s, 1973's Head Hunters was a massive success and a landmark album in jazz fusion. He led his funky backing group, the Headhunters, with heavy electric synths on a record that outsold even Davis' fusion masterpiece, Bitches Brew. The Headhunters struck out on their own in the years following the album, and while Hancock is not to be heard on this 1975 live recording at San Francisco's Winterland, the group without him still brought the funk in a deep, spacey way.

Lead Guitar player Dewayne Blackbyrd McKnight would go on to join Parliament-Funkadelic and was part of the Brides Of Funkenstein live band and is featured on Birdie from the Birdes of Funkenstein Live cd on AEM. Contributed many tunes to Parliament, Funkadelic, George Clinton, P-Funk All Stars and Mr. Fiddler as well as many other sessions. He is also a multi-instrumentalist.

OK, is it true that the Headunters were also known, pre- or post-Hancock, as East Bay Rhythm?

I second Syncopatico's comment, its nice to see some different and long-lost live fusion music here. Along those lines, its also nice to be hearing some mid-70s Winterland bands that weren't headliners, like Brian Auger, Sons of Champlin and Earthquake. Lots of great music was played, and not all of it was on top of the bill.

Nice to see some "lesser known" fusion stuff appear here apart from the more famous Maha Orch and Weather Report shows! (Any other Headhunters with or without Herbie would be a pleasure to hear!) Would love to see more of this type of material here, especially i know the Bottom Line in NYC hosted a bunch of fantastic "smaller scale" fusion performances like the great British band Brand X and even stuff like the collaboration between Patrick Moraz and Bill Bruford on piano & drums. Anyway, even though the sound on this concert is quite rough, the Paul Jackson/Mike Clark rhythm section was one of the greatest of all time!
