Concert Summary

Richard Stekol, who appears here to have relative past, was one of, if the not only originator of a band, based in Orange County, called "Honk". Honk became a the quienessential FM underground band; down here, but shot to prominence when they provided the incredible soundtrack to (then)one of the BEST Surf Flicks of all time: "5ive Summer Stories" produced/released in '72-'73? Stekol's instrumental on the song(s): 'Pipeline' and I think a song called 'Lopez' or something like that?? Basically a song dedicated to Gerry Lopez; then thee best free style surfer; semi-big wave rider of that era/genre? But I digress. "Honk" was a standout band; as a unit and reminents of 'Honk' still exist today.....as Tris Imboden, the drummer who replaced the accomplished and heralded Danny Serraphine (sp), in Chicago back in the early, early 80's until this day!!!

Always liked the Funky Kings album. Never knew there were any live shows floating around. We need more of the Boarding House shows from 75-77. Garland Jeffreys, Hall & Oates, Jesse Winchester to name a few. The old club on Bush St. put on some great shows and KSAN broadcast quite a few.

The Funky Kings were a great band. They wrote, sang and played (with some of the best Studio musicians) wonderful songs. But they had the same problems as American Flyer or the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band. Individuals put together, from different backgrounds, by records executives, to make the next Supergroup, hardly resulted in success. Track 1, 4 and 5 from this concert are the best. Incredibly on track 1, Jack Tempchin almost sounds like Glen Frey.
