Concert Summary

At age 84, Earl Scruggs remains America's greatest living Bluegrass icon. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2008 Grammys, and he continues to perform with his sons as the Earl Scruggs Revue. Having perfected a three finger style of banjo playing (aptly called the "Scruggs style"), he has recorded or performed on hundreds of popular bluegrass and country albums.

This show, recorded Scranton in 1972, is an excellent—though brief—example of what the Scruggs Revue was like in its infancy. Because he was playing with his sons who were in their 20s at the time and had…entire summary

My best friend had a little to much firewater at THE RITTER NATURAL AMPITHEATER IN Huntington West Virginia, He swapped hats with a Policeman and then put it on a continued dancing of course this is a no-no,he was surley on his way to jail and someone one stage said ah come on he him stay and he will behave himself. To my shock he let my buddy stay and enjoy the outdoor show -- Those were the DAYS at MARSHALL UNIVERSITY WOW 1977-1981 I THINK---Thanks Rob

Track 4 is entitle Kush(reprise) on your listing. The excellent Columbia lp "Live From Kansas State" was recorded around this same time, and this song is entitled "Carolina Boogie". It's on the LP. This lp was also part of a two-fer cd release by Collectibles.

I would add to the bio that Flatt and Scruggs composed the theme to the 50's television show 'Andy of Mayberry' or the Andy Griffith Show which was titled 'The Fishing Hole'. It might be the most well known whistlin' song.

Noted in the credits is the Father of All Dobro(resonophonic guitar) players, Burkett "Uncle Josh" Graves. Uncle Josh Graves picked with Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper, then with Flatt & Scruggs & The Foggy Mountain Boys, then left with Earl. Countless "biscuit board" pickers allude to Josh for the inspiration to lift the strings for a steel bar entertainment, for countless lap style resonator guitar players, including the likes of Ohio born Jerry Douglas! Uncle Josh was a kind picker & his influence is a historic American Icon! Essentially a blues axe, Uncle Josh reached far more genres of music than he ever would know. Gone now, not forgotten, forever!

To clarify the location... The University of Scranton is in Northeast Pennsylvania in the city of Scranton. Your notes indicate upstate New York. Apparently the writer did not read the title where it indicates Scranton.

I attended this show. The Byrds came out with the ESR and both bands jammed for the encore!

Those 2 songs are from the '72 Byrds with Clarence White/Skip Battin/McGuinn and Gene Parsons maybe. He may have been gone by this time. Earl and the boys toured with the Byrds so must be a mix up in the tape. I've never heard the Byrds do Central Park live. This is from the Skip '72 solo LP. And yes Clarence is playing his little electric F2 gibson mandolin on both songs. Roger singing tenor. No Scruggs in those songs I can hear. If they were Vassar would saw off a break and Uncle Josh would slide one in. On the 2 unknown songs the first is Earl's version of Bugle Call Rag. Very nice and the 2nd one is Earl's instrumental Foggy Mtn. Special a song he still does live today. Take out the 2 Byrds songs and not much left of the Revue but nice to hear both bands on clear recordings from '72. Wish there were more!

Track 3 is "The Bugle Call Rag"

  • McByrds | Wednesday, August 06, 2008 | 12:17 pm

Central Park and America's Great National Pastime, are Byrds song. They are sung by Skip Battin. Roger Mcguinn introduces Central Park. Anyone know if Clarence White also played on them. McByrds
