Concert Summary

This recording was made at the prestigious Rainbow Theater in London while the band was going through musical and personnel transitions. The year prior, they had added keyboardist Michael McDonald (ex-Steely Dan) and moved their West Coast rock sound more in the direction of adult pop/R&B. Of course, McDonald (who would later go on to release two successful albums of Motown covers) had a lot to do with the shifting direction as well as the band's newfound success.

This is my favorite of their concert. I remember this one growing up. Saw it on TV, and loved the keyboard solo michael did that led into "It Keeps You Running", which is another favorite of mine. I love the old school Doobies too, before Michael was in the band. I do think Michael took them to a higher stardom that what they would have though.

I would have loved to see this show. Transition from one great band to another. Not too many bands have pulled that off.

I was at this concert. That makes me ancient! It was a really great night. We were about 8 rows from the front, bang in the middle where the sound was terrific. For some reason, the band came on late at about 9.20pm and played for two hours - no doubt over-running the licensed time for the gig. But it didn't seem to matter in 1977. A lot more songs were played that night, including Neals Fandango, Clears As The Driven Snow, Long Train Runnin' and Listen To The Music. Tom Johnston wasn't there. He was having trouble touring for personal reasons, I seem to remember. Note some of those guitar solos - the unmistakable Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter. At the time, I had never seen anything like his guitar playing before. He was amazing, sitting on a high chair, drumming his legs on the bar where he rest his feet. I can still recall him coming to the front of the stage with Pat Simmons during Road Angel and both of them sitting down playing their guitars like there was no tomorrow. Baxter was crossed legged and Simmons had his legs dangling over the edge into the Rainbow's old orchestra pit. This was a magical night.

Yes, I saw this tour. Tom Johnston was no longer in the line up. I remember it was about a 2 1/2 hour show though. Still remember it as it was the 2nd of about 30 times I've seen them.

I'm pretty sure Tom Johnston is not present for this concert. Pat Simmons (China Grove), Michael McDonald (Take Me In Your Arms), and Bobby LaKind (Road Angel) take Tommy's songs.
