Concert Summary

Dixie Dregs drummer Rod Morgenstein has his own particular memory of the night the group taped its King Biscuit Flower Hour broadcast. "I broke out in one of the worst skin rashes, on my entire body, that had me itching worse than any case of poison ivy I've ever had," he says with a laugh. "I was going out of my mind. I remember after the show, going to somebody's house - a total stranger - and just asking them if I could soak in a tub of freezing water just to try to numb this discomfort." And the show? "Oh, yeah. It was good."

What always amazes me about this group is the flow from which the music comes. Sometimes its jazzy sometimes country like all the time incredible. Steve Morse is one of my favorite guitarists of all time to hear those razor sharp awesomely fast riffs just makes me smile uncontrollably.Very tight rhythm section. What a great show to listen to thanks for putting on here.

Caught them in Wallingford, Ct in the late 70's. Henry Paul Band were headliners. Got there late and thank the Good Lord there was a no name crew before both of them. Both bands were top shelf. Small venue-Great Show!!!!Went right to the record store to get Night of the Living Dregs, What If, Free Fall. Steve Morse remains an all time favorite.

I've been trying for years to remember the name of my favorite Dregs tune... never could stumble upon it unti NOW! "Take It Off The Top"! (Track 12). It's a shame these guys never got the fame they deserved. I guess instrumental bands are at a disadvantage in our era.

I use to live in the Dregs practice house..played on the bill with them in the 70's several times and they were great out of the box. Record companies really didn't know what to with them but this concert is just another great performance in the history of a band that was always great.

First exposure to the Dregs was around the time of "Freefall". Wore the vinyl out - 2X. Then caught them in a very small off campus club called "Thirsties" in Mobile, AL early '77. Fire marshall had to turn people away. Most amazing concert I have ever seen. I've been a devoted follower ever since. Thanks for making this live show available.

Calaveras County Fairgrounds, California - a summer day show with Sanford/Townsend Band, the Dixie Dregs and the Marshall Tucker Band back in '77 or '78. We went for the Dregs, the rest was just a bonus, we had already burnt the grooves off of their first album and were totally jazzed that they were doing a gig at the fairgrounds, a tiny outdoor venue that may have been able to handle about 2500 folks on a good day. We took a cooler chuck full of ice and pre-mixed margaritas, a HUGE plastic bong and a dozen twisted music freaks into the show. The Dregs fired that joint up and the crowd danced and screamed so much that Marshall Tucker was a bit reluctant about following them.... In the end, they did ok but, having to follow the Dixie Dregs was a bit tough on them....

I was so excited by the Dregs when I heard their demo album recorded at the University of Miami (The Great Spectacular)and subsequently saw them in a bar in Athens, GA that I asked them to let me be their first roadie...and I was for the next four years...they were always an incredible live band and I was honored to drive their truck (which I wrecked in '78), set up rigs (usually Steve's and Andy's), and mix the audio for the shows...this particular "show" was a strange one and I was genuinely shocked many years later when I saw the CD of it in a Borders Book Store because to me it was a disaster...neither I nor the band had any idea that the set was being recorded for a King Biscuit show, and as it turned out during the recording of it, I was shuffled off to a part of the audio console that had a "dummy" mix which gave me very little control over the levels of the instruments in the studio...the little monitor system that was serving as the PA for the studio audience blew up on the first song...T Lavitz was so incensed at me that his keyboard levels were out of control (as is evidenced even on this finished product)that he didn't speak to me for a long time thereafter...still, I wouldn't have traded those years I got to travel with the band for anything...and I will never understand how they escaped wide popularity...I will say that this recording is way better than what seemed possible at the time...I'm glad it's here to be savored...
