Concert Summary

Long before the Chambers Brothers forged a fusion of funk, rhythm and blues, gospel, blues, soul, and psychedelic music into their 1968 hit, "Time Has Come Today," breaking through racial and musical divides in the process, the brothers were one of the most promising young gospel groups in the country. The four brothers who formed the group (they had four other brothers as well as five sisters) grew up in poverty, children of a Mississippi sharecropper during the 1940s. While earning a meager living picking cotton in Lee County, the most musically inclined brothers—guitarists Willie and…entire summary

I was probably at this concert. The Chambers Bros. were a powerful Gospel harmony group that was reminiscent of the 5 Blind Boys of Jackson, Miss. I saw them at folk festivals and coffeehouses around the Los Angeles area during the early '60s. A little later, they began to add a last set that was more blues-oriented with Willie playing an acoustic Gibson guitar, Lester on harmonica and George on washtub bass. When that was well-received, they began to lean more toward blues and r&b, eventually switching to electric instruments. By the late '60s and early '70s, they'd become famous for their recording of "Time" which was so unlike anything else they'd ever done. Stil, this Gospel period represents the Chambers Bros. at their best in my opinion.

Back in the day (as they say) I found a coverless copy of Love, Peace, and Happiness stuck amongst some old newspapers someone had donated to a paper drive. I had never heard of these guys, but I took the album home, played it, and was immediately a fan. Somehow, I lost that record, but re-acquired it years later on CD. It's still great stuff. Thank you for putting this out. The Chambers Brothers should be recognized for what they are; one of the finest R&B groups ever.
