Concert Summary

This is The Byrds' late show from the final night of a three-night Fillmore West run headlining over Fleetwood Mac and John Hammond, Jr. This performance took place early on in the McGuinn/White/Battin/Parsons lineup, which would last longer than any other Byrds incarnation.

At the time of this show, the band was touring to promote their Ballad ofentire summary

I saw the Byrds in'66 or'67 and loved them.

This is a decent Concert ex. Crosby and Clark.and w, the new players.

Roger ( Jim ) always comes through.

I saw the Byrds in Holland at the famous Holland Festival in Kralingsebos Rotterdam at the end of june 1970 just a few months after this gig; they were tighter, much better in fact. The sound was great and the guitars of McGuinn and White are still ringing in my ears after all those years.. The Live tracks of their record The Byrds Untitled gives you a pretty good idea what thet sounded like in 1970. They were one of the (several)high points for me of this great festival (except for the rain of course!)with some of the best band of the period many from the US (Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, Santana, canned Heat, It's a beautiful Day etc..) they probably played the Bath festival just a few days later. It's true though that after 8 great albums and the departure of Crosby, Clark and eventually Hillman the band went downhill.

Why did they play that ridiculous version of Roll over Beethoven? Not a good match for their style

I totally agree, bubbahey-- no way is Clarence overrated! He is a true original. I'm still waiting to hear a guitar player with a B-Bender from Nashville, L.A., or anywhere whose playing sounds like they really listened to what Clarence did. And overplaying? If Clarence overplayed, then so did Hendrix. Personally, I like the "busy" style on these songs, and from the drums it gives the band extra punch and tightness. BTW, if the bass wasn't buried in the mix (that's not supposed to sound like a drum solo in "Eight Miles High", the bass is barely audible!), Skip's busy playing would probably be criticized for overplaying, too.

True, not the same band without Crosby (good or bad? up for debate...), but then again, not the same band after Gene Clark left. I've always tried to appreciate this incarnation of the Byrds for what they were, not what they were not. I saw this lineup three times; always incredible.

I don't think Clarence was overrated. I mean how many people even know about him? They should, but guitar wankers are better known. He was a fine player who influenced other greats like Tony Rice and David Grier.

Good bank, but too country for me. Not the same band w/o David Crosby
