Byrds guitarist Clarence White was on the Andy Griffith Show. Pay close attention next time you watch. He was one of the musicians in the hillbilly family who played bluegrass from the bed of their pickup truck. You will recognize him.

Great gig by a great lineup. I wish I could have seen this one (but I was 16 at the time) I have seen McGuinn & Hillman numerous times since, but this really cooks! The Battin/Parsons backbone kicks it into another gear & Clarence's sound interweaves perfectly with McGuinn's tone. Check this out!! If anyone is playing close to this today, please let me know!

I was at this show with a friend. Great. I also remember Bill Graham taking the stage after the second act--McKendree Spring--and announced that he wanted to introduce a new singer/pianist to America. Out walked Elton John, who played for about an hour by himself on the piano. Blew my mind. Then the Byrds performed.

Why wasn't any of this on the Byrdmaniax or Farther Along reissues? That would have made them worth picking up! The Byrds are great ! I've seen Roger McGuinn live and he puts on a really good show.

The likely date of the Byrds at The Cow Palace with Tom Donahue announcing is either July 4, 1965 or October 2, 1965. "Liar, Liar" by The Castaways peaked at #12 on the Billboard Chart on September 18, 1965. The Byrds definitely played on October 2 (my reference says Byrds/14 other bands) and probably played July 4. The July 4 show was a day after The Beach Boys Summer Spectacular at The Hollywood Bowl, which featured Beach Boys/Righteous Brothers/Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs/The Byrds/Donna Loren/Sir Douglas Quintet/Sonny and Cher/Dino, Desi and Billy/The Kinks/Ian Whitcomb. It seems reasonable to presume some of the same acts played The Cow Palace the next day (although not The Kinks, after Ray Davies got into it with a musicians union guy, banning the Kinks from America for 4 years). Do you recall if the show was Summer or Fall?
