Concert Summary

Although The Beach Boys are often disparaged for not being as "hip" as other Fillmore era bands, they were undeniably one of the most innovative groups of the '60s, and Brian Wilson's production and arranging skills still stand as having created some of the most compelling recordings of that decade. This set, recorded live on the closing night of the Fillmore East, captures the group at a time when their performing abilities were at a peak - just as…entire summary

addendum... folks mention this is an "audience tape". Not so - this mix is identical to my WNEW broadcast copies I made that night. See my separate post for explanation of the mix.

I recorded this off WNEW that night. The story on the mix is simply that WNEW had an entire seperate set of mic's for the broadcast - and didn't cover the Beach Boys well. If you listen to Mountain from that same night, you'll hear similar in Leslie West's vocals - but they did manage to adjust during the concert. I think the Beach Boys simply weren't covered totally. Probably sounded fine in the hall. Anyone who was there care to comment?

I first became a BB fan when I heard Surfin'USA way back in the Summer of '63 over here in the UK. I saw them on every tour they did to the UK up until 1970. At the last venue, in 1970 they appeared 6 nights in a row and I attended all 6 concerts. As my pal worked at the Club, I was able to meet the guys and I spoke to a guy in a Davy Crocket style tassled jacket and jeans....his name was Steven Desper and he was the groups "sound engineer". He had recently completed the "SUNFLOWER" LP and it was the first "TRUE" quadrophonic sound album by a "pop group". ..If all you fans who have commented would think and understand...it is VIRTUALLY impossible to re-create STUDIO SOUND...in a live Club or stage venue.... that is the one thing that continually upsets or disappoints us all. Believe you me, from the late 50's to that week in late 1970...we had seen virtually EVERY POP Star on the planet over here in the UK...from Little Richard to The Beatles to Del Shannon to The 4 Tops, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Roy Orbison, Pat Boone, Neil Sedaka...and virtually every British group that ever graced the hit charts... ...I had seen a great concert by the 4 Tops a week or 2 prior...and walked out thinking how crap the "sound" was... and how the balance had let the 4 singers down....even the awesome LEVI STUBBS... ..then I met Steven Desper. I mentioned how the BB's got to sound so good live.....remember I had seen these guys from 1964 onwards at almost every tour they had done...with AND without BRIAN. ...Steven Desper told me...THIS TIME...you will hear almost studio quality sound as each instrument has it's own mic....the sound is then mixed and balanced on a mixing deck at the side of the stage which balances the sound to a level predetermined to that of the original studio recording...fed back out of the deck and to the speakers....NOW in those days, that was hi-tech to a young guy like me..... ..BUT when they came on stage and hit into " DARLIN" ...it WAS like sitting in my front room with ear-phones on. The balance, mix, harmonies, were ALMOST PERFECT.....so much so that I vowed after seeing them perform that week...that I would NEVER go to see them live again as I would NOT want to spoil THAT MEMORY of my ALL TIME favorite harmony group by taking a chance on seeing them perform not up to par again.... ...the only time I would do it is IF I ever got to Southern California and saw them on the beach shows they sometimes did.... ....the nearest I got was Florida and I missed them by 2 days in the early 90's...and yet I wasn't too upset as I still had the memory of 1970 to look back on. ...I listened to all their albums through the years....and still do...at the age of 63, their music has been a constant source of pleasure throughout my life... in the summer time, the windows in the car go down and California Girls belts out from my car...whatever the young pups or passers by may think about the silly old guy with the Beach Boys tee-shirt on... ....do not judge their music OR their place in Music History on some old live sound track......listen instead...and appreciate their harmonies ...dig out once more IN MY ROOM, WARMTH OF THE SUN, DON'T WORRY BABY, CALIFORNIA GIRLS, WHEN I DIE, SURF'S UP, DEIRDRE, WOULDN'T IT BE NICE, GOOD VIBRATIONS, HEROES & VILLAINS...AND THE AWESOME " GOD ONLY KNOWS " ... ....AND THINK ALSO THAT NO LESS A MUSIC LEGEND THAN PAUL MCCARTNEY ADMITTED THAT "PET SOUNDS" is HIS FAVOURITE ALBUM OF ALL TIME. ..AND TO FINISH....LITEN TO BRIAN'S STUDIO VERSION OF " LOVE and MERCY" AND LISTEN TO THE HARMONIES HE CREATES....THE BEACH BOYS HEART AND SOUL MAY BE DIMINISHED WITH THE DEATHS OF DENNIS & CARL...BUT BROTHER BRIAN IS DOING OK WITH HIS BAND IN KEEPING THE LOVE ALIVE..... ...from a UK fan of 46 years of the Beach Boys and their music... ..Keep the faith.... ..Don't forget....Everyday...SURF's UP.....TILL I DIE..... ..LOVE and MERCY to you all on Wolfgangs Vault from Bill Stroller....

When I was in high school - roughly 1967 I think it was - at a football field in Mt Vernon outside of NYC, there was a concert for $6 - Beach Boys, Rascals, Four Tops and some other lesser groups. Not a bad deal. This recording is a C , more a curiosity than great sound. Fun regardless.

Happy B'day today to Mr. Bruce Johnston (interesting slightly jazzy rendition of Elton John's "Your Song")
