Concert Summary

After nearly 18 years of live performing, as both backing musicians and as headliners, the Band had reached a crossroads in 1976. The group's seemingly effortless virtuosity and Robbie Robertson's literary gift for conveying a deep sense of Americana (despite being Canadian) in his songwriting, resulted in a wonderfully organic sound that made the Band one of the most admired and respected musical institutions on the planet. Having created some of the most gloriously rich and influential music of the late 1960s and early 1970s, the group's Thanksgiving 1976 performance at San Francisco's…entire summary

Saw the Band on this tour at both the beacon, in nyc, and the capital theater in jersey, both from the first few rows, what an increadable experience , being a fan for so long and only seeing them once with robbie , opening up for clapton at the nassau collesium, thanks bill

I saw them that year in Plattsburgh, NY. Visiting my old college. They made the trip worth the while. They didn't miss a beat without Robbie Robertson. If you didn't read This Wheel's On Fire, get it and read it.
Richard and Rick you are truly missed. Rest in peace.

These guys were, of course, excellent musicians, and seven years didn't dilute their chops. Yep, the Band was special. Sad Robertson didn't throw in his hat to this, but he wrote some incredible stuff. How did a band of mostly Canadians "get" Americana? "The Night They Drove Ol' Dixie Down" is perhaps the most beautiful and mournful songs about the U.S. experience. I was recently re-listening to "the Brown album" - and I was struck with the restraint of all players, especially Robertson. He doesn't solo till side two! And that was recorded on the heels of Hendrix, Cream, - i.e., indulgent (but delicious) guitar work. The Band is for all time.
