Concert Summary

Initially formed in 1959, the group that would become the Band in 1967 had first worked as backup musicians for Canadian rock legend Ronnie Hawkins, and later, for America's greatest troubadour, Bob Dylan, when he went electric. This recording, made just prior to the original band's Scorcese-documented swansong concert, The Last Waltz, serves as a testament to their incredible musical legacy.

A live version of my fave Tears of Rage ! Why was this not good enough to be included in the Last Waltz nor Rock of Ages ? Scorcese should have deleted Paul Butterfield or Lawrence Ferlingetti (sic) and included this great Richard Manuel catharsis.

Turned onto The Band, Northern Lights Southern Cross. This band had it all. did not need any studio musicians. Robbie Robertson plays that subtle rocking guitar. Down right shame disease and drugs started picking them off one by one. Great Production.

to the mad trapper: hey, guess what? we were both at that music inn show in august (right?) of '76, just months before the last waltz. they were late getting there, as i recall, and came on just before sunset. a large contingent of us were sitting right in front of the stage, and we'd all taken acid a few hours earlier. twas one of the greatest musical experiences of my long and illustrious career. i first saw them at boston symphony hall on halloween night, 1969, when the opening act was a terribly drunk van morrison, previewing the material that would soon become the 'moondance' album! but the final tour, from which this recording is drawn, was a more impressive occasion.

Saw them twice on this tour, The Music Inn, Stockbridge Massachusetts. Two of the best shows I've ever seen
