Suki Hill
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, as a young photographer, Hill attended a multitude of events, including the Monterey Pop Festival, Beatles concerts, Bob Dylan jam sessions, as well as notorious Fillmore shindigs. From these historical and groundbreaking times, she photographed artists such as the Mamas & the Papas, Hugh Masekela, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, the Who, Jimi Hendrix, Ravi Shanker, David Crosby, Bob Dylan, the Beatles, The Grateful Dead, Dizzy Gillespie, Brian Jones and Steve Miller.
Events such as the three-day festival held in Monterey, and hosted by the Mamas and the Papas, debuted band after band of ‘60s pop icons. Engaging with these artists, Suki was able to capture Janis Joplin tearing her heart out singing ‘Ball and Chain’ and Jimi Hendrix wailing ‘Wild Thing.’
