I saw the original Hero & Heroine line-up, but with Oliver replacing his dad Rick Wakeman on keyboards and the performance was superb (after the 1st song to let Dave's voice warm-up). House sound (main vocal speakers) were a major problem in distorting Dave's vocals (not bands equipment). Other than that it was as good as I remember back from 1970, perhaps better! This was Toronto/2009. An Extremely under-rated band of amazing writing & performing skills! Truly some of GB's finest modern POETRY set to beautifully orchestrated melodies & harmonies. Others have compared w/ Genesis and rightfully so for live performances ('tho more intimate & less over-blown than Genesis) There are few in the world so capable while remaining so modest as a band. As a classically trained musician on brasses & woodwinds, & about as viciously honest a critic as you'll probably ever meet.. I can say that there are only 5 bands in the world today I'd pay to see "LIVE" & Strawbs are in the leading 3. Sadly, due to age & health reasons, I fear this may have been their last trip across "the pond" and am sad my grandkids will likely never get the chance at this experience! At least they'll still have the recordings.

Excellent concert from one of the most underrated progressive rock bands of that time period.

I was at this concert and took some decent photos, except I attempted to develop them myself and they are terrible. I have seen Strawbs 6 times since 1971; the only show that was not so good was at a place called The Joint in the Woods, I believe it was in Parsippany, NJ. Dave was pissed at the beginning of the show, having quaffed several Guinness. He stopped Hero and Heroine after a few bars because the Mellotron didn't sound right, then they went right back into it. After about 4-5 songs, Cousins settled down, and the show was all right from there.

After reading the reviews, I must agree with a lot of them. This band is almost an equal to Genesis , Yes and , even that supergroup of prog rock, ELP(Emerson,Lake & Palmer). How about a concert where they do Benedictus (their signature hit)? Also, in the "extrodinaire" genre , how about some Michael Quatro (yeah, Suzie's brother) which you already have in the vault. Also a good Rare Earth concert would be nice. THANX for reading and encouraging Wolgang to dig up some more treasures!

Until the official Summary, I'll add this. According to the Strawbs website, this is the Hero/Ghosts line up of Cousins, Lambert, Cronk, Coombes, and Hawken. Nice show, compares to the Live at the Calderone CD that was recorded the next December. Cousins here is in much better voice, and John Hawken sounds great on the keys. Nice addition to the Vault.

RE: Road Warrior 49. The band have an excellent and informative website you should check out. There's plenty of worthy compilations out there. I often feel that the Strawbs were a band of missed opportunities. Victims of frequent line-up changes, too many label shifts, unfortunate choices of producers and an inability to read the musical tides. And they're an old-fashioned 'headphones' band in my opinion. They could never recapture their studio subtlety on the live stage. Yeah, they could rock it - but that really wasn't the strongest card in their hand. That said, the main reason I still go an see them whenever they hit town is to hear Dave Cousins' between-song anecdotes. Funny funny man. Wonderful comedic timing. Self depreciation at it's best. The bad weather has affected a few dates on their current tour. Stay safe guys. See you in Yorkshire soon!
