Their music was uncompromising hard rock, and the term "heavy metal" was popularized in their first hit, "Born to Be Wild." Their leader John Kay was noted for his ever-present sunglasses and tight black leather pants. Steppenwolf was also an unabashedly political band; Kay was a highly articulate and thoughtful spokesperson for their political beliefs.
