Concert Summary

Walter Becker and Donald Fagen first crossed paths in 1967, when both were students at Bard College in upstate New York. Discovering they had common musical and literary interests, in addition to a shared dark sense of humor, they became fast friends. Forming a song writing partnership, they would hone their craft over the next 5 years, first by landing a small publishing deal in New York, which then led to work as session and touring musicians with the pop group Jay And The Americans. By 1971, upon the recommendation of ABC/Dunhill producer Gary Katz, they had signed on as staff…entire summary

I wish I would have been to a Dan concert. They would have been fantastic.

Loved this show, and the summary is well-written and informative. I had no issues with the sound.

Dinky, sorry for the dis. Regardless of the reason, it would sure be swell if these were hi-fi recordings. Nevertheless, I suppose we should be grateful to have them at all. Peace.

    WOW!

Love The Dan. And for the record, I don't care if it was chiseled in stone and played on a broken phonograph; it's a piece of history. IMO, some folks have nothing better to do than vent their life's frustrations in their (naturally God-given) role as Ordained Sound Snob. Kind of like the people, who, complain, when, someone, uses, too, many, commas, in, their, blog, posts. Get over it and appreciate this for what it is, not for what it isn't. Just my opinion.

does @moo have a better recording of this show?

no, i didn't think so, so he better just shut up and go elsewhere if he can't appreciate the magic in a bottle that is this recording (and most everything in this Vault!). me, i'm buying this one!

thanks again for all the sound, WV, and keep it coming.

Absolutely dreadful sound, & it has nothing to do with how many instruments were on stage. This sounds like a 3rd gen cassette at best, with tons of wow & flutter.

For those complaining about the sound, this was a large multi-instrumental show. The following instruments were played in one set: two electric guitars, acoustic guitar, pedal steel guitar, acoustic piano, electric piano, synthesizer, congas, bass, and two complete drum kits and at least four vocalists. That Steely Dan would even attempt that in 1974 shows how ambitious they were. The sound isn't perfect, but it ain't half bad considering the challenges presented. Oh, and they brought their studio engineer Gary Katz along to mix the sound.
